We bought Big Mac Tivio as an 18 mo. old cripple. John had seen him previously and was mightily impressed with him then, and with his top-notch AQHA foundation pedigree, but Mac’s asking price was far higher than our cap. By the time his owner had ruined him with straight alfalfa, 2 gallons per day of sweet feed and stall confinement, the guy was willing to give him away for a farm payment. We decided to take a chance on this colt who was walking (if you could call it that) on horribly swollen fetlocks—all four of which were on the ground. This was in 1988, long before our advent into Dynamite in 1993, so all we could do was put him on our standard free choice pure mountain grass hay, whole oats and seaweed. The change was startling. Within 3 weeks, he was standing mostly upright, able to actually run in his run and within a few more, he was exercising himself for hours a day between his run and his own personal 65’ round ring, tossing his tire with great abandon with all fetlocks, although still swollen, up in normal position. In spite of the fact that his hind fetlocks seemed permanently swollen and misshapen such that he would never be able to compete, he looked good enough, and had such a vital energy about him, that we started breeding him to our own mares and standing him at stud at four. Then came Dynamite! Can a 7 year old horse with really bad hind fetlocks improve “frozen” joints? Well, Mac certainly did! Hard to believe, but the swelling gradually decreased until one day in 1994 when I was showing him to a prospective breeder, I realized there was virtually no swelling at all! Unbelievable!! That year we had so many mares in (booked full with 40 mares per season), that we were using him, live-cover, up to 3 times per day. Thanks to his Dynamite program, he never lost any weight but stayed in prime condition throughout and was so potent that he could just about settle a mare with a wink! Our settling rate was so high (98%) that a CSU vet could hardly believe it since their rate was in the 60% range. Mac was still receiving his free choice great hay, but now he was also being offered Free Choice 1/2:1, NTM Salt, and Izmine, and received 1 oz Regular per day (we started off with Plus but switched to Regular with better results) plus 2 oz Breeder Pac, PGR (2 qts/day during breeding season & 1 qt/day at rest) and 1-2 cups HES/day during breeding season. Mac has been retired since 2001 not because of him but because of us. At 17, he looks 7 and his metallic buckskin coat simply shimmers with dapples. We still get people pleading to breed to him but we turn them away for the sake of our sanity. Mac is truly a Dynamite success story! CO Gold Director Rowan Emrys & John Hanna |

| Even though retired, Mac still enjoys controlling his tiny 3 mare harem by his presence alone within his paddock which runs along the entire width of their pasture separated by a 12' alleyway. |
