Did You Know?...   (from various sources)

  • Flavonoids linked to better breast cancer survival - An increased
dietary intake of flavonoids may enhance breast cancer survival by over
30 per cent, suggests a new epidemiological study from the US. The
study of 1,210 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer found that
individuals with the highest intake of flavones and isoflavones prior to
diagnosis had a 37 and 48 per cent lower risk of all-cause mortality.

  • Additional warnings urged for 2 flu drugs: FDA finds Tamiflu, Relenza
linked to bizarre behavior, deaths - Food and Drug Administration
experts are recommending new label warnings about possible dangerous
psychiatric side effects of influenza drugs Tamiflu and Relenza,
according to FDA documents. The documents, posted Friday on the FDA
Web site, were prepared for a meeting Tuesday of the FDA's Pediatric
Advisory Committee. Studies revealed 596 cases in which patients who
took Tamiflu experienced "neuropsychiatric events" such as delirium,
delusions or hallucinations. The episodes sometimes led to impulsive
behavior and self-injury. Tamiflu is made by Roche Holdings.

  • Osteoarthritis painkiller is removed from sale - A painkiller taken by
thousands of people for osteo-arthritis has been removed from sale
because it may be linked to liver damage. The use of Prexige
(lumiracoxib), which has been taken by 5,000 people in the last year,
has been suspended by the Medicines and Healthcare products
Regulatory Agency. New data has found an increase in the number of
cases of serious liver reactions which have occurred with the 100mg
dose. In some cases the reactions have been in people taking the drug
    for less than one month.

  • GlaxoSmithKline Spent $3.6M Lobbying – British pharmaceutical maker
glaxoSmithKline PLC spent more than $3.6 million in the first half of
2007 to lobby the federal government, according to a recent disclosure
form. The company lobbied Congress and the Department of Health and
Human Services on issues related to patent reform legislation,
pharmaceutical regulation and foreign investment in the U.S.

  • EU officials propose ban on genetically modified corn seeds -
European Union environment officials have determined that two kinds of
genetically modified corn could harm butterflies, modify food chains and
disturb life in rivers and streams, and they have proposed a ban on the
sale of the seeds, which are made by DuPont Pioneer, Dow Agrosciences
and Syngenta. The preliminary decisions, seen by the International
Herald Tribune, are circulating within the European Commission, the EU
executive, which has the final say. Some officials there are skeptical
about a ban that would upset the powerful biotechnology industry and
could exacerbate tensions with important EU trading partners like the
    United States.

  • Adverse Drug Events Increase — The number of serious adverse drug
events reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) more
than doubled between 1998 and 2005, as did deaths associated with
adverse drug events, according to a report in the September 10 issue of
Archives of Internal Medicine. A serious adverse drug event, as defined
by the FDA, means an adverse event that resulted in death, a birth
defect, disability, hospitalization, or was life-threatening or required
intervention to prevent harm, according to background information in the
article. Such events are voluntarily reported to the FDA through its
Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) and known as "MedWatch"
reports. The reports come to the FDA directly or through drug
manufacturers, who are then required to forward them.

  • Eggs can aid weight loss - In a study from the Pennington Biomedical
Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, overweight women who had
an egg for breakfast lost twice as much weight as women who had a
bagel for breakfast. The reason given was that the protein in the egg
kept them better satisfied...therefore decreasing hunger, which
ultimately helped these women to eat fewer calories during the day.

  • Malnutrition 'a widespread risk' - A quarter of all adults admitted to
hospital and care homes in the UK are at risk of malnutrition, a major
survey has found. The British Association for Parenteral and Enteral
Nutrition (Bapen) collected data on 11,665 new admissions to 372
institutions over three days. The association is calling for nutrition
screening on admission as standard for all patients.

  • Hospital blunders 'kill 90,000 patients' - More than 90,000 patients die
and almost one million are harmed each year because of hospital
blunders, research suggests. Errors during surgery, misdiagnosis, falls,
infections and complications are all to blame for the problems that
contribute to the death and injury tolls in England each year.
Researchers found that between 8.7 per cent and 10 per cent of hospital
stays involved such mistakes and up to a half were preventable. Prof
Trevor Sheldon, the author of the study published in the British Medical
Journal, said a stay in hospital was as "risky as bungee jumping".

  • FDA panel wants extra warnings on Glaxo asthma drugs Advair,
Serevent - GlaxoSmithKline's best-selling drug Advair, manufactured in
part at a plant in Zebulon, may get new warnings on its label
highlighting the drug's risk for children. A Food and Drug Administration
advisory panel said late Wednesday that the asthma treatment's label
should contain more information about its potentially deadly side
effects in children. The FDA panel also said the information should be
placed on the label of Serevent, another GSK asthma drug with the
    same active ingredient as Advair.

  • A spoonful of honey! - A teaspoon of honey before bed seems to calm
children's coughs and help them sleep better, according to a new study
that relied on parents' reports of their children's symptoms. Honey did
better than cough medicine or no treatment in a three-way comparison.
The folk remedy did better than cough medicine or no treatment in a
three-way comparison. Honey may work by coating and soothing an
irritated throat, the study authors said. "Many families are going to
relate to these findings and say that grandma was right," said lead
author Dr. Ian Paul of Pennsylvania State University's College of
Medicine. The research appears in December's Archives of Pediatrics and
    Adolescent Medicine.

  • Scientists find super fruits key to mouth cancer - SUPER fruits like
blueberries, blackberries and papaya could be used to stop mouth
cancer cells spreading through the rest of the body. They could also
reduce the risk of mouth cancer, according to research published in the
Journal of Cancer Research. The study, carried out at the University of
Hong Kong, found that as well as suppressing the spread of cancer, a
substance called lupeol found in blueberries and other "super fruit" also
reduced the size of the tumour three times faster than conventional
    drugs.

  • You are what your mother eats - A mother's likes and dislikes,
particularly for fruit and vegetables, is passed on to her infant during
breastfeeding, suggests new research from the US. A study of 45
infants, just under half of which were breastfed, showed that a baby's
preference for a certain food is dependent on its mother's tastes, but
only if the baby is breastfed, report researchers in this month's issue of
    Pediatrics.

  • Rocky Mountain National Park polluted - Colorado State University
scientists say Rocky Mountain National Park can blame land to its east
for a disturbing trend: the increase of nitrogen in the park. Scientists
have been studying the negative effects of the gas on the park's lakes
and vegetation for years, but had yet to trace its origin.  Tuesday,
professors from CSU's Department of Atmospheric Science announced
they had an answer. After collecting and studying airborne particles and
gasses, the team noticed the highest concentrations of nitrogen in the
park occurred when winds were coming from east of the Continental
Divide. The scientists, however, don't know whether Colorado's Front
Range is the sole culprit. Wind could be picking up the pollutant from as
far away as Texas. Sources of the pollutant include power plants,
    wildfires, automobiles and agriculture.

  • Self CPR - You're alone when suddenly you feel a pain along your jaw-
line or deep in your chest that starts radiating down your left arm.
These are SIGNS OF A HEART ATTACK so what to do? START
COUGHING. According to Rochester General Hospital, repeated and
vigorous coughing does help. A deep breath should be taken before each
cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing
sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be
repeated about very two seconds without let up until help arrives, or
until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get
oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and
keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also
helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get
    to a hospital.

  • Rethinking Fluoride - In its January 2008 edition, Scientific American is
publishing a 7-page article by Dan Fagan entitled "Second Thoughts
about Fluoride" (pp 74-81). Largely focused on the NRC report, he writes
"Scientific attitudes toward fluoridation may be starting to shift in the
country where the practice began."  The last paragraph of the article
summarizes the whole: "Opponents of fluoridation, meanwhile, have
been emboldened by the NRC report. 'What the committee did was very,
very important, because it's the first time a truly balanced panel has
looked at this and raised important questions,' says Paul Connett, a
chemistry professor at St. Lawrence University and the executive
director of the Fluoride Action Network, one of the most active
    antifluoridation groups world-wide. 'I absolutely believe it's a scientific
turning point because now everything's on the table. Fluoride is the
most consumed drug in the U.S., and it's time we talked about it.'" See

Point to Ponder #1 - Unvaccinated Children's Survey
by Rense.com

In 1983, the Centers for Disease Control recommended a total of 10
vaccines for our children. In 2007, the CDC recommends 36, an increase of
260%. Yet, no studies have ever been done to compare neurological
disorder ("ND") rates of unvaccinated children to vaccinated children. We
commissioned a national market research firm to survey more than 13,000
children in California and Oregon. Read the results here.

Cal-Oregon Unvaccinated Survey - "We surveyed over 9,000 boys in
California and Oregon and found that vaccinated boys had a 155% greater
chance of having a neurological disorder like ADHD or autism than
unvaccinated boys."

Point to Ponder #2 - A Poison Kiss: Product tests find
lead in lipstick by SafeCosmetics.org

Lipsticks manufactured in the United States and used daily by millions of
American women contain surprisingly high levels of lead, according to
product tests released by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Now three U.
S. Senators are asking the FDA to take action.

Read complete article, plus a list of tested lipsticks, at http://www.
SafeCosmetics.org

....as far as I am concerned, there is NO "safe" level of lead or any other
chemical, and once again, the FDA is absent. Unfortunately, far too many
women are lured into unreal-looking nonsense by magazine and
advertisement campaigns. Women now want "staying power" in red
lipstick and that is guaranteed to be dangerous. There HAS been an email
campaign going around warning of lead in lipsticks that gives a "home
test" which Snopes considers to be an urban legend. Regardless, far, far
better to eat real food with plenty of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables and
get naturally red lips (and glowing healthy skin!) from sheer health alone!

Point to Ponder #3 - Neck and shoulder tension:
Working with our ankles by Joe Culbertson, DC from
Dr. Joe's Newsletter

In part 2 of this article on our neck and shoulders, I talked about the
ankles. Specifically we addressed the fact that, if the ankles were not
aligned and functioning as intended, eventually the compensatory
patterns required by gravity would leave us with some kind of problem in
our neck and shoulders. In part three we have two goals. First to briefly
look at two other factors influencing the alignment of the ankles, and
then to look at some of the things we can do to help keep our ankles
functioning, as they should.

Sciatic Nerve:
This large nerve runs out of the skull, down the spinal cord, out of the
lower back (at several levels), and proceeds down to the ankles and feet.
The sciatic nerve is like all the other nerves in that it's functioning can be
affected by the bony alignment of any joint lying close to its path. Since
it runs the length of the body, there is more than one bony relationship
that will affect the sciatic nerve. In fact, there are seven! The alignment
of the atlas (first bone in the neck), the 2 nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th lumbar
vertebrae, and both ankles; all affect, and are influenced by, the sciatic
nerve.

What this means is that, if the ankles are disrupted, they will impact this
major nerve, which will then have a direct effect upon the lower back
(home of the lumbar vertebrae), and our upper neck (home of the atlas).
Naturally the reverse is also true. If for any reason the sciatic nerve is
adversely influenced (this could come from the disruption of the lower
lumber vertebra or the atlas as well as a few dozen other reasons) the
alignment of the ankles will be directly affected, leading to all kinds of
difficulty in our neck and shoulders.

Because of this direct neurological link (from head to toe so to speak) it
becomes rather evident that by helping our ankles remain healthy, we will
be not only be helping our neck and shoulders, but a slew of other issues;
from mechanical problems involving the legs, knees, lower back, and neck,
to physiological issues involving the organs of the body. In fact, there is
even a direct connection between the ankles and the functioning of our
brain.

Hearing:
There is a connection between the ankles and our hearing that, though
little known, is, nevertheless, very much a factor to be considered when
we are attempting to maintain or improve the health of our neck and
shoulders. In exploring the acupuncture energies of the body it has been
found that certain energetic centers (known as chakras) have direct
connections to our sensory systems as well as a direct relationship to
specific organs and muscles of the body. The relevant information here is
that our ability to hear, which is also an energetic function, is tied to a
chakra located on each ankle, and to the major muscles of the neck and
shoulders. Coincidence? I think not.

Over the years, I have seen hearing improvements have a direct effect
upon the mechanical issues of the body. When the hearing shifts, the
muscles of the neck and shoulders relax, the ankles become more stable,
and pretty much everything in between has an opportunity to regain a
healthier alignment and functioning. At the same time, I have also
witnessed significant changes in the alignment of a person's ankles to be
immediately accompanied by a significant change in his or her hearing as
well.

                           How can we help ourselves?
The connections between systems (especially the nervous and urinary
systems), structural mechanics (especially the alignment of the lower
back, neck, and ankles), and energetic patterns (from our thoughts to our
hearing) all indicate that healthy ankles will support the health of our
body in many ways. Properly functioning ankles will absolutely help bring
the entire body back into balance. From our hearing, to our ability to
utilize water, to the tension in our neck and shoulders, and many other
factors that influence our lives, all can be supported by just maintaining
an eye on our ankles.
Note: What we are about to discuss is not a method of fixing a problem
in our ankles. This is an approach that opens and allows the ankles to
function more closely in the manner they were intended. In other articles
and in the books to be published we cover the difficulty 'fixing' creates.

Habit patterns we can develop that support our ankles.
  1. Making water (without chlorine and fluoride) our primary source of fluid.
  2. Frequently taking the time to give our full attention to what we are
listening to. This means to listen with no thoughts, and an awareness
of only what is being heard.
  3. Using all the methods available to support the stability of all the
sections of our spine and their surrounding musculature.
  4. Walking with our feet parallel to one another.
  5. Selecting shoes that not only support the feet but also allow each foot
to move as it should. For this information please refer to the book
"Secrets of the Spine", which I am now in search of a publisher for.

Though this is but a glimpse of all the factors that tie into the bones,
muscles, ligaments, and nerves that make up the ankle joints, hopefully
it will be enough to demonstrate just how connected and important this
part of our body really is. This connection to the ankles is powerful. By
manipulating the ankles I have seen acute and chronic neck and shoulder
tension vanish.

All of which is really great, except for the fact that we cannot perform the
commonest form of manipulation, for correcting ankle alignment, on our
own ankles. So I came up with this following little routine. Done daily, or
even more frequently after an ankle injury, it has demonstrated its
effectiveness in maintaining the proper functioning of the ankles. It is
simple, it is easy, and it goes like this.

  • Begin by listening to something (such as the 60 beats per minute
music I have for the Spine Tuner Approach) with all your
concentration. This means no thinking, however, if you find this
impossible in the beginning, do your best to allow all your thoughts
to be the kind that make you feel good. After a couple of minutes of
this (initially this will seem like a very long time), continue to listen
but shift you attention to your ankles.

  • Now with your full attention upon one ankle begin to move it in every
direction your imagination can come up with. Move it slowly,
carefully, and repeat each motion three times. As you move it, focus
on the motion and not on any limitation you may discover. This is
also true of any pain or discomfort. If a particular motion causes
pain, back away from this motion and do only what is possible
without pain. The purpose of the motion is so you can become fully
aware of your ankles. We want no awareness of pain, limitation, and
any other difficulties. So keep the motions simple and doable.

  • This also applies to your thinking. When you move your ankle focus;
don't think. But if thoughts come in, do your best to avoid any about
the limitations you have observed or any other form of judgment
about this part of your body. Let only thoughts of appreciation come
into you consciousness as you are moving and focusing upon your
    ankle.

  • After a couple of minutes, shift to the other ankle and repeat the
moving and focusing. Though doing this routine once in any
comfortable position is all that is needed, if you have the extra time
and the inclination, try doing this first while lying, then sitting and
lastly while standing (of course, if done in the standing position you
need to insure that your are fully supported while you are standing
on only one leg). Focusing on each ankle while the body is in the
three main gravitational positions seems to enhance this procedure
but, again, it is not necessary.

  • The key is just to focus once a day on your ankles. These few
minutes, done daily, reboot the neurological connections and literally
return the muscular and bony relations to healthier positions. This is
true for even the most devastating of ankle injuries. Even when the
ankle can no longer return to its original physical appearance, its
functioning and impact upon the rest of the body can be affected
    with this daily routine.

This then concludes our focus upon the neck and shoulders. Remember, if
you decide to work with your ankles, it will take some time to make this
routine a habit. Do what you can to give yourself that time.

Until next time,
Dr. Joe

Point to Ponder #4 - Eating Fat: What You NEED to
Know by Catherine Ebeling, RN BSN
http://www.uswellnessmeats.com/newsletter/
catherine_ebeling_dec16_2007_newsletter.html#Continued

As we start to pay attention to eating more GOOD fats, and begin to turn
away from the high carbohydrate/high sugar/low fat diets that have been
the stars of the food pyramid for the last several years, there has been
much confusion on which fats to eat; how much of each kind of fat to eat;
and what kinds of fat are actually the ones we SHOULD eat. It is very
difficult to de-program ourselves from years of hearing how we should be
avoiding animal fats and eating vegetable fats. But research has shown
that eating animal fats, such as the fat found in grass-fed meat, raw
cheeses and CLA rich butter, are the healthiest and contain the highest
amounts of Omega 3 fatty acids and CLA.

The scientific literature is equally clear about the dangers of
polyunsaturated vegetable oils--the kind that were supposed to be good
for us.

Because polyunsaturates are highly subject to rancidity, they increase the
body's need for vitamin E and other antioxidants. (Canola oil, in
particular, can create severe vitamin E deficiency.) Excess consumption of
vegetable oils is especially damaging to the reproductive organs and the
lungs--both of which are sites for huge increases in cancer in the US.

In test animals, diets high in polyunsaturates from vegetable oils inhibit
the ability to learn, especially under conditions of stress; they are toxic to
the liver; they compromise the integrity of the immune system; they
depress the mental and physical growth of infants; they increase levels of
uric acid in the blood; they cause abnormal fatty acid profiles in the
adipose tissues; they have been linked to mental decline and
chromosomal damage; they accelerate aging.

Excess consumption of polyunsaturates is associated with increasing rates
of cancer, heart disease and weight gain; excess use of commercial
vegetable oils interferes with the production of prostaglandins--localized
tissue hormones-- leading to an array of complaints such as autoimmune
diseases, sterility and PMS. Vegetable oils are more toxic when heated.
One study reported that polyunsaturates turn to varnish in the intestines.
A study by a plastic surgeon found that women who consumed mostly
vegetable oils had far more wrinkles than those who consumed traditional
animal fats.

When polyunsaturated oils are hardened to make margarine and
shortening by a process called hydrogenation, they deliver a double
whammy of increased cancer, reproductive problems, learning disabilities
and growth problems in children.

Saturated fats from animal sources-previously portrayed as the enemy--
form an important part of the cell membrane; they protect the immune
system and enhance the utilization of essential fatty acids. They are
needed for the proper development of the brain and nervous system.
Certain types of saturated fats, such as the kind found in Pemmican
provide quick energy and protect against pathogenic microorganisms in
the intestinal tract; other types provide energy to the heart.

Cod liver oil is an excellent source of vitamin D. Cod liver oil also contains
special fats called EPA and DHA that are important components of Omega
3 oils. The body uses EPA to make substances that help prevent blood
clots, and regulate a myriad of biochemical processes. Recent research
shows that DHA is essential to the development of the brain and nervous
system.

Butter, especially grass-fed butter contains both vitamin A and D, as well
as other beneficial substances. Conjugated linoleic acid in butterfat is a
powerful protection against cancer. Certain fats called glycospingolipids
aid digestion. Butter is rich in trace minerals, and naturally yellow Spring
and Fall butter contain the Vitamin K2, which is very beneficial for bones
and teeth.

Cholesterol is essential to the development of the brain and nervous
system of the infant, so much so that mother's milk is not only extremely
rich in the substance, but also contains special enzymes that aid in the
absorption of cholesterol from the intestinal tract. Cholesterol is the
body's repair substance; when the arteries are damaged because of
weakness or irritation, cholesterol steps in to patch things up and prevent
aneurysms. Cholesterol is a powerful antioxidant, protecting the body
from cancer; it is the precursor to the bile salts, needed for fat digestion;
from it the adrenal hormones are formed, those that help us deal with
stress and those that regulate sexual function.

While it is well known that high blood cholesterol levels are associated
with an increased risk for heart disease, scientific studies have shown
that there is only a weak relationship between the amount of cholesterol
a person consumes and their blood cholesterol levels or risk for heart
disease. For some people with high cholesterol, reducing the amount of
cholesterol in the diet has a small but helpful impact on blood cholesterol
levels. For others, the amount of cholesterol eaten has little impact on
the amount of cholesterol circulating in the blood.

In a study of over 80,000 female nurses, Harvard researchers actually
found that increasing cholesterol intake by 200 mg for every 1000 calories
in the diet (about an egg a day) did not appreciably increase the risk for
heart disease.

The following nutrient-rich traditional fats have nourished healthy
population groups for thousands of years:

  • Butter
  • Beef and lamb tallow
  • Lard
  • Chicken, goose and duck fat
  • Coconut, palm and sesame oils
  • Cold pressed olive oil
  • Cold pressed flax oil [ed: known goiterogen]
  • Marine oils

The following so-called "healthy" fats can cause cancer, heart disease,
immune system dysfunction, sterility, learning disabilities, growth
problems and osteoporosis:

  • All hydrogenated oils
  • Soy, corn and safflower oils
  • Cottonseed oil
  • Canola oil

All fats heated to very high temperatures in processing and frying
The vital research of Weston Price remains in the shadows because the
importance of his findings, if recognized by the general populace, would
bring down America's largest industry--food processing and its three
supporters--refined sweeteners, white flour and vegetable oils.

Representatives of this industry have worked behind the scenes to erect
the huge edifice of the "lipid hypothesis"--the untenable theory that
saturated fats and cholesterol cause heart disease and cancer. All one
has to do is look at the statistics to know that it isn't true.

What the research really shows is that both refined carbohydrates and
vegetable oils cause imbalances in the blood and at the cellular level that
lead to an increased tendency to form blood clots, leading to myocardial
infarction. This kind of heart disease was virtually unknown in America in
1900. Today it has reached epidemic levels. Atherosclerosis, or the
buildup of hardened plague in the artery walls, cannot be blamed on
saturated fats or cholesterol. Very little of the material in this plaque is
cholesterol, and a 1994 study appearing in the Lancet showed that almost
three quarters of the fat in artery clogs is unsaturated. The "artery
clogging" fats are not animal fats but vegetable oils.

Built into the lipid hypothesis is the postulate that the traditional foods
of our ancestors--the butter, cream, eggs, liver, meat and fish eggs that
Price recognized were necessary to produce "splendid physical
development"--are bad for us. Physicians received instruction on the
"prudent diet," low in saturated fat and cholesterol, for "at risk"
Americans, even though studies indicated that such diets did not offer
any significant protection against heart disease. They did, however,
increase the risk of death from cancer, intestinal diseases, accidents,
suicide and stroke.

No need to follow the current trends and fads of the dietary industry. Lets
look back to the centuries-old truths and observe the diet our ancestor
ate while living robust, active, healthy, energetic lives with high intake of
saturated animal fats, and organic grass-fed meats and dairy such as U.S.
Wellness offers.

...... and, in another newsletter, Dr. Al Sears, MD goes on to say: If you
follow the latest developments in nutritional science, you've probably
heard about the so-called "good" fats (omega-3s) and "bad" fats (omega-
6s).

Omega-6s are prevalent in the American diet. We all need this type of fat
in moderate amounts. But in excess, omega-6s have an inflammatory
effect on the body and can lead to arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease.

In contrast, omega-3 fats - which most people don't get enough of - are
crucial to normal brain development, cell membrane formation and
hormone production. They're also needed for efficient metabolism of
cholesterol and triglycerides, and increased cellular energy.

And unlike omega-6s, they actually ward off arthritis by reducing
inflammation and joint pain. They're also a key to heart health. Omega-3s
increase HDL cholesterol - the "good" kind - and reduce LDL cholesterol -
the "bad" kind.

What's more, omega-3s have been proven to prevent macular
degeneration in humans, a problem that commonly comes with aging. The
macula, an area at the back of the retina, breaks down as we get older
and can lead to blurry vision or even blindness.

While they're both critical to good health, omega-6s and omega-3s must
be consumed in the right ratio - about 2:1. Yet for most Americans, the
average ratio is a very unhealthy 20:1.

My recommendation? Boost your omega-3s. Make an effort to get this
essential fatty acid everyday. Now what you'll hear most often is that fish
is the best source of omega-3s. But here's something you won't hear:
Free-range, grass-fed beef is comparable in omega-3 fatty acids to wild-
caught Alaskan salmon.

Point to Ponder #5 - Pathogen Destroyers Give
Immune System a Helping Hand by HSI

The Fantastic Four

It's a rare immune system that can't use a little help. Let's face it; few of
us are perfect. I don't know about you, but I find it difficult to get as
much sleep as I should. And although I'm pretty good at managing stress,
life has a way of throwing stressful surprises at us on an almost daily
basis. And then there are the exercise and diet issues. Again, few of us
are perfect.

So wouldn't it be nice to provide your immune system with a security force
that would quickly respond to any breech of the perimeter, so to speak,
freeing up your immune functions to do their work at top capacity?

Let me introduce you to a first class security force: four Pathogen
Destroyers that are ideally suited to give your immune system a strong
helping hand.

Flu fighters

First: What's a pathogen? The word comes from the Greek and literally
means "birth of pain" - a good way to describe a disease-causing
microorganism that may arrive in the form of bacterium, virus, fungus or
parasite.

Four excellent Pathogen Destroyers were featured in a recent issue of
Baseline of Health, a weekly e-letter published by HSI Panelist Jon
Barron. When I asked Jon about the Pathogen Destroyers (we'll call them
PDs to keep it simple), he told me he always keeps several bottles on
hand so he'll be prepared fight off infection.

Jon added: "If you catch a cold or flu at the first sign and hit it hard, you
can stop it. Like most illnesses, if you wait until it's fully
established, it's harder to get rid of it. And one other note, after you get
rid of it, keep hammering for another 2-3 days to make sure it's really
gone and not still lurking around."

Point to Ponder #6 - Pass the Salt by William
Campbell Douglass II, M.D.,
Daily Dose Newsletter,
www.douglassreport.com

Dear Friend,

Where would I be without the efforts of the loony so-called "health
organizations" in this country? One thing's for sure: I'd have a lot less to
write about. This time, it's an organization known as the Center for
Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) who went before the FDA to try and
get the U.S. government to put strict limits on an essential nutrient that's
critical to your good heath: salt.

What's next? Limiting the amount of oxygen we breathe?

Salt has long been a favorite whipping boy of the nation's health industry,
and to their credit they've done an excellent job of foisting their anti-salt,
anti-sodium agenda on the public. In fact, the lie that salt is bad for you
has achieved "common knowledge" status among the misled public. Go
ahead and ask anyone you know, "Is salt good for your health?" and I'll
bet that 10 out of 10 of the people you ask will tell you with complete
and utter certainty that the answer is, undoubtedly, "no."

You'd never know it from reading the mainstream press, but salt's role in
the many ailments for which it's commonly blamed is highly controversial
within the medical community. In spite of what you hear on TV and read
in magazines, there's actually NO AGREEMENT in the medical community
that salt is the key factor in the development of such dangerous maladies
as high blood pressure and hypertension!

Regardless of this fact, the whack-jobs at organizations like the CSPI can
boldly park themselves in the lobby of the FDA and make the outrageous
demand that the government change salt's status as a food additive from
"generally accepted as safe." The CSPI would prefer that salt be a
controlled substance, as though it were a drug.

Sadly, CSPI isn't alone in its wackiness. They were joined by my
misguided colleagues in the American Medical Association (AMA), whose
anti-salt ranting reached a fever pitch. During this public meeting, the
AMA's vice president for science, quality, and public health said, "The
deaths attributed to excess salt consumption represent a huge toll – the
equivalent of a jumbo jet with 400 passengers crashing every day of the
year, year after year."

Allow me to pause for a moment and wipe off the hyperbole.

A slightly less manic statistic put forward at the meeting by the AMA was
the absurd claim that 150,000 U.S. deaths could be prevented every year
by the simple expedient of halving the amount of salt contained in
American food products.

But there are some other pertinent statistics about salt that the CSPI and
the AMA failed to put forward at the meeting, like how many lives are
SAVED by salt every year.

Yes, SAVED by salt. Are you ready for me to skewer another popular
sacred cow?

Lost in all the clamor from "public health" know-nothings is the cold, hard
fact that without salt, you'd die. That's right: Salt keeps you alive. It's an
essential nutrient THAT THE HUMAN BODY CANNOT MANUFACTURE ON
ITS OWN. Salt plays a critical role in regulating vital bodily function, and
is a key element in the fluids that transport life-giving oxygen throughout
the body. Salt maintains the body's fluid balance.

Here's another salt truism you'll never hear from the experts at CSPI: The
body AUTOMATICALLY disposes of excess salt in your system. So you can
ignore the popular claim that your diet can put "too much salt" in your
body. That's just not physically possible.

The alleged benefits of a low-sodium diet is another lie. Remember how I
told you earlier that salt is routinely blamed for high blood pressure?
Well, some studies have shown that A LOW-SODIUM DIET CAN ACTUALLY
CAUSE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. The reason for this goes back to the
body's need for salt. If you zealously avoid salt and sodium, your kidneys
will go into overdrive to conserve the precious salt in your system. This
triggers the body's back-up system to try to compensate for the absence
of salt, which spikes blood pressure. Sodium deficiencies have also been
linked to memory loss and even Alzheimer's disease.

I could go on. But you know where I'm going. Don't let the anti-salt panic
mongers goad you into throwing out your saltshaker. Sit back, relax, and
know that a couple of shakes on your bucket of popcorn will not only
make it a lot tastier … it will also help keep you alive longer.

Taking my healthy food nuts with plenty of salt,

William Campbell Douglass II, M.D.

...... one thing that Dr Douglass does NOT mention is the difference
between standard bleached, chemicalized table salt and REAL SALT like
Dynamite's NTM salt which is even better than possibly contaminated sea
salt. Click

Menu of the Month - New Year's Eve Gathering
Instead of a New Year's Eve party that leaves you feeling sick the next
day and unable to remember the "fun" you had, why not consider a
gathering which ALL can enjoy and remember? Here are some ideas that
just might ring
your New Year's chimes!

THEME - Start the new year off by remembering others less fortunate.
Have everybody, adults and kids alike, bring a bag, box, pillowcase or
whatever of clothing, toy, or bedding/linen items they no longer need and
donate them to your local homeless or battered women's shelter.

ACTIVITIES - Consider some old-fashioned fun and games for a new-
fashioned year. Play Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Donkey (or Politician?). Get down
and dirty on the floor with some Jacks and Marbles; even Twister. Play
Charades. Have a corner Chess or Checkers table. EVERYONE can join in
and truly have fun! You can even have the kids making funny hats or
crowns for the winners of the contests!

BEVERAGES - If you have a juicer, serve fresh fruit and/or vegetable
juices in wine glasses. If you have a bar blender or just a good strong one
like a VitaMix or BlendTec, make a variety of slushies and serve in
margarita glasses. Definitely if kids are present, use the new "bullet-
proof" stemware. Here are a few slushie "cocktail" combos using either
frozen fruit or adding a handful or so of small ice cubes into the blender -
you may also want to add a bit of water to get them to drinking
consistency rather than slushie consistency . . .
Tropical Zinger - 1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks (use canned if
fresh/frozen unavailable), 1 segmented orange, 1/2 peeled lemon...blend
and garnish with celery swizzle stick
Pink Lady - 1 1” thick fresh pineapple round, 1 peeled, segmented
orange, 1/2 cup frozen raspberries...blend and garnish with stuffed olive
Banana Nog - 1 small peeled frozen banana, 2 cups whole milk, ¼
teaspoon vanilla extract...blend and garnish with ground nutmeg
Tomato Cocktail - 1 can Muir Glen diced tomatoes, 1/2 cucumber, 1/2 cup
fresh carrot juice (if available), handful parsley, juice of 1/2 lemon,
handful of ice...blend and serve with jicama (or celery) swizzle stick

FINGER FOODS - Make it simple by preparing a variety of finger foods
ahead of time. Another option is to provide only the beverages and let
the guests potluck the finger foods - perhaps even by assigning numbers
1-8 (as below) and doing the same with the sweets with each person
making 1 savory and 1 sweet!
1...Stuffed Mushrooms - blend until chunky: 1/2 c macadamia nuts,
soaked until soft, a handful spinach, juice of one lemon juice, 2 T water,
and  2 t sea salt. If blender gets stuck, add more water a tablespoon at a
time to get things going. Or simply blend spinach with Feta or cottage
cheese.
2...Stuffed Anaheims - make a quick and simple guacamole by smashing
avocadoes with a few tablespoons of your favorite organic or homemade
salsa and stuff that into halved/seeded Anaheims. If no avocados are
available, mix some organic canned refried beans with some salsa and a
handful of frozen/thawed corn kernels.
3...Stuffed Plum Tomatoes - cut off the top and remove enough innards
to make a pocket and stuff with Tabbouli: to 2 cups cooked grain-of-
choice, add 1/2 cup @ minced cucumber, parsley, green onions and 1/4
cup minced mint; toss with mixture of  1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, 2T
EVOO, 1 tsp minced garlic, 1/2 tsp NTM salt, pinch @ ground allspice (or
cumin), cayenne pepper, and fresh ground black pepper.
4...Hummus with Veggie Dippers - Puree together: 2 cups
cooked/drained garbanzos, 2 T tahini (or cashew butter), 1 clove peeled
garlic, drizzle olive oil, salt/pepper to taste, 1 tsp @ ground cumin &
ground coriander, and 2T fresh lemon juice; garnish with chopped
scallions, paprika and drizzle more olive oil just before serving. In
addition to the standard carrot and celery stick dippers, also use "sticked"
jicama, red and yellow bell peppers, asparagus, green beans, snow pea
pods, and anything else that strikes your fancy!
5...Roast Roots & Dip - Chop up roots of choice (carrots, potatoes, sweet
potatoes, rutabagas, etc., into finger-dipping size; toss with a tablespoon
or so of macadamia nut/coconut oil, sprinkle with paprika  (or simply toss
with balsamic vinegar) and roast, single layer, at 400 tossing once mid-
way to make sure all are roasting evenly. Remove when outside is nicely
browned. Provide a ginger-almond dipping sauce: blend together 1/4 c
almond butter, 1 minced garlic clove, juice of 1 lime, 3 T agave nectar, 2
T @ soy sauce, water, grated ginger, dash red pepper flakes, and 1/4 t
sea salt until mixture is smooth. If needed add more water one
tablespoon at a time to reach a desired consistency.
6...Chicken Nuggets (or wings) & Dip - Rinse off raw nuggets (or wings)
with cool water and pat dry with paper towels; toss as above with
balsamic vinegar or oil and seasonings; roast as root vegetables above.
Serve with organic, bottled sauces such as BBQ, mustard or sweet'n'sour.
7...Swedish Meatballs & Dip - Sauté 3T minced onion in 1T butter. Mix
thoroughly with: 1# finely ground beef, ,1 cup @ half and half, fine
breadcrumbs, 2 eggs, 1 tsp. salt, 1/2 cup ketchup or tomato sauce, 1/2
tsp. @ pepper & ground allspice, and 2T minced parsley, fresh or dried.
Refrigerate overnight. Then form tiny balls about the size of the end of
your thumb. Saute in butter, shaking so they don't burn, until nicely
browned, cover pan and bake at 350 about 30 minutes. Serve with
toothpicks (dangerous for little ones!) and the same dipping sauces as
above.
8...Salmon Spread - drain 1 16oz can Vital Choice salmon & mash; add
juice of 1 lemon, 2 tsp chopped chives, 1 tsp minced onion, 1/4 tsp
rosemary, 6 crushed peppercorns, dash of ground clove, 1/2 tsp NTM salt
and mix well; fold in 1 cup sour cream, cover and chill at least 1 hour.
Serve with Rye Krisp or organic or gluten-free crackers of your choice.

Ethics by Terri Jean

  • Rise with the sun to pray. Pray alone. Pray often. The Great Spirit
will listen, if you only speak.

  • Be tolerant of those who are lost on their path. Ignorance, conceit,
anger, jealousy and greed stem from a lost soul. Pray that they will
    find guidance.

  • Search for yourself, by yourself. Do not allow others to make your
path for you. It is your road, and yours alone. Others may walk it
with you, but no one can walk it for you.

  • Treat the guests in your home with much consideration. Serve them
the best food, give them the best bed and treat them with respect
    and honor.

  • Do not take what is not yours whether from a person, a community,
the wilderness or from a culture. It was not earned nor given. It is
    not yours.

  • Respect all things that are placed upon this earth—whether it be
people, animal or plant. Honor the Spirit in all things.

  • Honor other people’s thoughts, wishes and words. Never interrupt
another or mock or rudely mimic them. Allow each person the right to
    personal expression.

  • Never speak of others in a bad way. The negative energy that you
put out into the universe will multiply when it returns to you. All
persons make mistakes. And all mistakes can be forgiven. Bad
thoughts cause illness of the mind, body and spirit. Practice
    optimism.

  • Nature is not for us, it is a part of us. They are part of your worldly
    family.

  • Children are the seeds of our future. Plant love in their hearts and
water them with wisdom and life’s lessons. When they are grown,
    give them space to grow.

  • Avoid hurting the hearts of others. The poison of your pain will return
    to you.

  • Be truthful at all times. Honesty is the test of one's will within this
    universe.

  • Keep yourself balanced. Your mental self, spiritual self, emotional
self, and physical self—all need to be strong, pure and healthy. Work
out the body to strengthen the mind. Grow rich in spirit to cure
    emotional ails.

  • Make conscious decisions as to who you will be and how you will
react. Be responsible for your own actions.

  • Respect the privacy and personal space of others. Do not touch the
personal property of others—especially sacred and religious objects.
    This is forbidden.

  • Be true to yourself first. You cannot nurture and help others if you
cannot nurture and help yourself first.

  • Respect others' religious beliefs. Do not force your belief on others.

  • Share your good fortune with others. Participate in charity. Be willing
to give back to the people, so that People will live.
