  • MY WEBSITE!  .... as you can see, my website has undergone a major
makeover indeed! There are still some areas requiring attention, but if you
do spot any errors, please let me know. Also, remember to "Refresh" your
computer when you visit so you obtain only the latest version.

  • PHOTOGRAPH (above) - Isn't that just the most beautiful photo ever of the
horse in the field? It's by the very gifted photographer Celia Roberts and is
just one of the many magnificent "Earth Images"  photographs available
for purchase from her on her website, www.paonia.com/~celiaroberts - or

  • NEW DYNAMITE ZINC+ FOR MEN - this excellent supplement that helps
support prostate health, has just been improved again! Click here for the
    new information.

  • "GREEN DENTIFRICE" - Now it's Chinese made toothpaste tubes that
contain diethylene glycol; you know, antifreeze. It kills dogs and humans
both. You won't be concerned about this if you purchase safe, botanical,
    hand-crafted toothpowder from www.evansgarden.com! This brown-colored
(no, not green!) powder comes in a little brown bottle, it works
    fantastically and it lasts "forever."

  • DOG FOOD - And of course all Dynamite products contain only personally
vetted-by-Jim products of the highest caliber so no need to worry about
any toxic ingredient in anything including the dog food. For dog food
information and alternatives, go to my pet nutrition page.

  • JUST BECAUSE - Adous Huxley once wrote "After silence, that which comes
nearest to expressing  the inexpressible is music." I have no idea why earlier this
spring I decided to watch American Idol. Normally I stay as far away from
such popular crassness as I possible can. I told myself that I wanted to
see what all the hype and hoopla was about. In reality, I believe it was to
observe the magic of a beautiful young girl, Jordin Sparks, sing some of her
songs so exquisitely that I quite literally got goosebumps. When John
heard her, he came running in and sat as entranced as I. It was incredibly
humbling to see Jordin stand before a crowd of thousands in person and
millions in TV land, zip open her heart and soul and expose herself to all of
us so that we might share just the slightest bit of experience of soaring to
heaven. As a person and as a divine voice, Jordin is a rarity. Thank
goodness that she was recognized for being such an old soul in such a
young body. If she stays with well-written ballads, hers will definitely
become a Voice of the Ages which is far more important than simply the
flash-in-the-pan 2007 "American Idol" designation which she so deservedly
    won.

DYNAMITE TESTIMONIAL - It Takes a Neighborhood to
Heal a Broken-legged Horse

Valentine's Day 2007, and I was heartbroken. My seventeen year old horse
had just been kicked in the foreleg badly enough that he. He was not
bearing any weight on his leg and it was also bleeding. The force of the kick
had created a puncture wound.

As I was waiting for the vet thinking the worst and worrying and becoming
very emotional, I heard the words "touch him". I had just finished my Reiki
training and had finished all my acupressure classes so I  switched gears
and started Reiki. We both became calmer. This was the beginning of our
journey to be totally immersed in energy healing along with the wonderful
Dynamite supplements.

The vet arrived and took x-rays. He called later that day and wanted to see
us at his office. The x-rays showed that he had a 4" crack in his radius along
with spider fractures. He said there was a 50-50 chance that he would
recover. We could put screws in it (surgery) but he was an older horse or we
could try and heal him ourselves. We chose the latter. The vet strongly
recommended that we tie him to the ceiling so he couldn't lay down. I  didn't
feel comfortable doing this so we didn't. The vet was also worried about
bone infection with the pucture wound so he recieved antibiotics. We were
also  told to be aware that laminitis was a good possiblity.

Bandit was stalled for a week and then put on turn-out. His Dynamite
healing protocol, as suggested by my Sponsor Rowan Emrys, was:

10 days Trace Minerals 20 drops
    4 ounces of Izmine
    2 ounces of Hiscorbadyne
    MSM
    2 teaspoons Yucca
    DynaPro 2x day
    1 cup PGR
    Dynamite vitamins
    Release
    DynaSpark
Miracle Clay when heat showed up

The balance of his protocol included:
    antibiotics
    pysmpytum
    magnets
    daily acupressure treatments
    reiki
    light therapy
    hair analysis

He didn't muscle-test for the magnets until later in his healing. He also told
me when to take them off. By watching Bandit he told me when he was
ready for more room, ready for his bandage to be off and to "quit poking me."

He lay down almost every night. Although this worried me I figured he
wouldn't do it if he couldn't. We didn't have much of a problem with the
worry of laminitis. In the begining there was heat in his front good legs. We
applied Miracle Clay and that always took care of the heat.

I am very grateful for the people in my neighborhood. For the love, Reiki and
energy that was sent to my horse. Also for the people who let me use their
barn and paddock area. For the friend who checked on him, cleaned his stall
while I was at work. For the phone calls inquiring about his healing progress.
And for Dynamite a big hurrah as I felt very confident in healing him myself
knowing what I had behind me to support him.

We were truly blessed as we gathered information from many people. Bandit
was such a vibrant being in his healing. He always had a bright eye and
good attitude

When the vet came seven weeks later to do the second X-
ray Bandit decided to buck and run at his arrival. The
vet's words were "We won't tell Barbaro about this."  The
x-ray showed everything was filling in and you could see
a slight line where the crack was. He said I could start
working him into riding in June. This  was great for at
first he said I would not be able to ride him for a year.
Bandit shows no limp in his walk, trot, canter.

Without all the love, support and Dynamite, I think the outcome may have
been different. Bandit is happy to still be around and I am so happy to still
have him with me. Thank you all!

Did You Know?...   (from various sources)

  • RISKY STATINS -- All 19 statin drug trials from 1990 to 1999 suffered
from age and gender bias. The statin drug trials were mainly conducted
using middle-aged men, and did not study the effects among women,
children, and the elderly or ethnic groups. The General Accounting Office
(GAO) of the United  States Government has recognized the bias and
stated: "The trials generally have not evaluated the efficacy of cholesterol-
lowering treatment for several important population groups, such as
women, elderly men and women, and minority men and women.  Thus,
they provide little or no evidence of benefits or possible risks for these
    groups."

  • WHY NOT ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS  -- Two professors at Purdue
University have discovered that when you're eating, artificial sweeteners
block the feeling that you're getting full. In other words, they disarm your
body's first defense against obesity. Their results, published in the
International Journal of Obesity, showed that "mouth feel" plays a crucial
role in the body's ability to sense the number of calories  that are being
consumed - and that artificial sweeteners disrupt the natural calorie
    "count" based on sweetness.

  • CANCER DOCTORS PAID FOR PRESCRIBING DUBIOUS DRUGS --
Procrit, Epogen and Aranesp - known collectively as epoetins or ESAs
(erythropoiesis stimulating agents) - are among the world's best-selling
drugs, with combined sales of $10 billion last year. In the US, they
constitute the single biggest drug expense for Medicare and are given to
about a million patients each year to treat the anemia that is caused by
cancer chemotherapy or by kidney disease. Two of the world's largest drug
companies, Amgen and Johnson & Johnson, have been paying hundreds of
millions of dollars in incentive bonuses to doctors - including medical
oncologists - who prescribe the anti-anemia drugs.

  • WHICH IS MORE DANGEROUS: TAKING A DAILY ASPIRIN OR BEING A
FIREFIGHER? -- Taking an aspirin every day is nearly as risky as working
as a firefighter. For 50-year-old men, taking a daily aspirin (which many do
to help prevent heart disease and strokes) increases the risk of death by
the equivalent of 10.4 deaths per 100,000 men per year. This is similar to
the added risk that professional firefighters face. Firefighters have an
added risk of 10.6 deaths per 100,000 people per year, compared to 3.9 for
all occupations and 0.4 for office workers. In comparison, drugs that have
been withdrawn from the market, such as the painkiller Vioxx and the
multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri, increased the risk of death by 76 deaths
per 100,000 people per year and 65 deaths per 100,000 people per year,
respectively. Tysabri may be reintroduced to the market if the FDA deems
it worth using despite the risks.

  • TV Link to Diabetes - Diabetic children who spent the most time glued to
the TV had a tougher time controlling their blood sugar, according to a
Norwegian study that illustrates yet another downside of too much
television. The findings, based on a study of children with Type 1 diabetes,
lend support to the American Academy of Pediatrics' advice that children
watch no more than two hours of TV daily, said lead author Dr. Hanna
Margeirsdottir of the University of Oslo.

  • Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) Revisited -  Apparently there still may be
some cold medicines, including some for children, containing the stroke-
causing drug PPA. This danger has been known since 2000 and the FDA has
recalled all OTC meds containing PPA. If you choose to use OTC cold
medications, it would be wise to check the ingredients very carefully and
perhaps to go so far as to call the TOLL FREE number given on every box
to make sure. Snopes.com does show this as valid but outdated although
there seems to be an upsurgence of concern and a new proliferation of
    email warnings circulating

  • Teflon Chemical Found in US Newborns' Blood - FOA, used to make
nonstick finishes, can migrate into food, especially microwave popcorn.
New studies by university researchers and scientists at the federal Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that a chemical many
scientists call a likely human carcinogen is present in the blood of nearly
every American, including newborns.  The chemical, perfluorooctanoic acid,
is associated with the manufacture and use of Teflon and other moisture-
resistant products. It is commonly known as PFOA. PFOA and similar
substances used in paper products in which such food as pizza and popcorn
are sold tend to migrate into food when the paper is heated. Microwave
popcorn bags release several hundred times as much of the chemicals as
does cookware that has been coated with substances like Teflon. The Data
raises questions about whether the FDA is underestimating the amount of
    the chemicals in food.

Point to Ponder #1 -  Toxic Fertilizer linked to Mad Cow
Disease?
 http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/2007/04/25/
toxic_fertilizer_linked_to_mad_cow_disease.htm

About three years ago the LA Times published an Associated Press article
"Toxic Waste Used as Fertilizer on Farms Reported".

The article stated that in Seattle, toxic heavy metals, chemicals and
radioactive wastes are being recycled as fertilizer and spread over farmers'
field nationwide --and there is no federal law requiring that they be listed as
ingredients.

The issue came to light in the central Washington town of Quincy,
population 4,000, when Mayor Patty Martin led an investigation by local
farmers concerned about poor yields and sickly cattle [see WA Free Press
"Poisoning Ourselves: Toxic waste in fertilizer" Mar 2003 --Ed].
Unfortunately, at this time the use of industrial waste as fertilizer ingredient
was a growing national phenomenon.

At that same time in Gore, Oklahoma, a uranium-processing plant got rid of
low-level radioactive waste by licensing it as liquid fertilizer and spraying it
over 9,000 acres if grazing land. And at Camas, Washington, lead-laced
waste from a pulp mill was hauled to farms and spread over crops destined
for livestock feed. While in Moxee City, Washington, dark powder from two
Oregon steel mills was poured from rail cars into silos at Bay Zinc Co. under
a federal hazardous waste storage permit. Then it was emptied from the
silos for use as fertilizer. The exact same material.

The Federal and State Governments encouraged this kind of recycling, which
saved money for big industry and conserved space in hazardous- waste
landfills. However, the substances found in recycled fertilizers included
cadmium, lead, arsenic, radioactive materials and dioxins. The wastes came
from incineration of medical and municipal wastes, and from heavy industries.

Because I happen to run the newest state permitted medical waste
treatment plant in California, and am acutely aware of the hazards of
treating such waste, I ask: Why isn't this recycled fertilizer brought up now
in the case of Mad Cow Disease. Why did are Federal and State Government
allow such contamination and why did the farmers do this to their own land?
Who is covering this up? Who benefited from this travesty? Who approved
this in the first place? And why isn't anything being done to those who
allowed this to happen to our nation's heartland?

I for one want answers. And I want those responsible for this to be brought
to justice. They deliberately poisoned our nations food chain for profit, and
should be punished as traitors to the American people.

Point to Ponder #2 - Oxycontin Makers Escape Jail by
Shane Ellison, M.Sc.
http://www.thepeopleschemist.com/

Street thugs selling crack and hippies peddling marijuana get life in jail.
Corporate drug dealers who kill and addict far more people escape jail by
paying small fines. This is Western Medicine at its best. At its worst, the
Food and Drug Administration aids corporate drug dealers by looking away as
they profit and destroy the lives of millions. Such is the case with Oxycontin
(oxycodone HCl controlled-release).

In the beginning, Purdue Pharma L.P. insisted that Oxycontin be used only
for cancer pain. In 1995, the FDA approved it for that very reason. Since,
then however, the addicting drug has been used outside of its intended
purpose thanks to false advertising on behalf of Purdue Pharma L.P.
Company heads have pleaded guilty:

"The maker of the powerful painkiller Oxycontin and three of its current and
former executives pleaded guilty Thursday to misleading the public about the
drug's risk of addiction, a federal prosecutor and the company said."

Here are the nasty details:

To spark early sales of the drug, Purdue circulated false DTC advertising
through its endorsements of Oxycontin in the world's most prestigious
medical journal, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The
FDA sent a letter to Purdue Pharma stating that the company was in clear
violation of the regulations. It's violation: making unsubstantiated claims of
effectiveness and grossly overstating the safety profile of Oxycontin while
promoting it for obtaining a "Life with Relief." Despite Purdue Pharma's non-
compliance with the law, the FDA did not press charges.  As a result, the
false marketing continued.

Putting wealth before health, Purdue Pharma L.P. distributed 15,000 copies
of an Oxycontin video to physicians without submitting it to the FDA for
review.

Entitled I Got My Life Back: Patients in Pain Tell Their Story, the video
presented pain relief experiences of various patients and the pain
medications, including Oxycontin, that they had been prescribed.  FDA
regulations require pharmaceutical manufacturers to submit all promotional
materials for approved prescription drug products to the FDA at the time of
their initial use. Since Purdue Pharma L.P. did not comply with this
regulation, the FDA did not have an opportunity to review the video to
ensure that the information it contained was truthful, balanced, and
accurately communicated. Purdue and the FDA acknowledged the oversight of
not submitting the video to the FDA for approval. Again, no action was taken!

Releasing a second version of the video, Purdue Pharma L.P. followed legal
procedure by submitting it to the FDA for review. However, in its report to
Congress the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) stated that the FDA
failed to review the video. Are you kidding me?  Later, it was discovered that
the company, as with the first video, made unsubstantiated claims and
minimized the risks associated with taking Oxycontin - AGAIN. Most
astounding, Purdue Pharma L.P. claimed that Oxycontin had been shown to
cause addiction in less than 1 percent of patients - a damned lie.

Purdue Pharma sold $1 billion worth of Oxycontin in less than five years from
the time of its approval, thanks to false advertising. In addition to profits,
false marketing has led to devastating effects on those people who were
prescribed Oxycontin under the wrong conditions. Consider that the number
of people who used Oxycontin for illicit purposes at least once increased
from 399,000 to 957,000 in a single year.[ii]

Recognizing the dangers of Oxycontin, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
has listed Oxycontin as a Schedule II controlled substance in the USA.
According to the DEA, since its release on the market the annual number of
prescriptions for the "synthetic morphine" has risen from about 300,000 to
nearly 6 million. During that same period, the number of oxycodone-related
deaths has skyrocketed by 400%. Currently, Oxycontin is the number one
prescribed Schedule II narcotic in the United States.

Exactly how Oxycontin works in the body is not understood, but its dangers
are well documented. Oxycontin is an opioid agonist (narcotic) which
possesses powerful addictive properties. These addictive properties are akin
to heroin and morphine and know no boundaries of destruction. Its addictive
nature can smother even the strongest of wills. Oxycontin produces
respiratory depression. Additionally, oxycodone causes a reduction in motility
associated with an increase in smooth muscle tone in the antrum of the
stomach and duodenum. As a result, digestion of food in the small intestine
is delayed or nonexistent, and propulsive contractions are decreased,
culminating in constipation and the backup of fecal matter.

While the FDA has played Paper Tiger by acknowledging Purdue Pharma's
indiscretions and giving them a small fine, the agency has done nothing to
curtail them - like throwing the bums in jail along with the street thugs.

Point to Ponder #3 - Wife Consumes Her Body Weight in
Jerky: Exposing and Evading Grocery Store Fat Traps by
Shane Ellison, M.Sc.
http://www.healthmyths.
net/W3CMS/article_display.php

My wife recently consumed her body weight in beef jerky. What was
supposed to be a light, healthy snack turned into an all out beef eating
binge. Her ravenous consumption made me ponder that it must be an
especially good brand. Rushing out of town, I bought it at my local health
food store. That was where I messed up big time…Ignoring the label, I was
ensnared by the number one grocery store fat trap – which was the cause of
my wife’s abnormal and ravenous consumption of the beef. If I can succumb
to them, then everyone is susceptible to the fat traps lurking in grocery
stores.

A grocery store fat trap is nothing more than a scheme designed by food
manufacturers to make you eat more of something that you think is healthy
– like beef jerky. You could think of these foods or food additives as fat
fertilizer. They are great for a company’s bottom line but really bad for your
“bottom.”

Right before she threw her head back to dump the remaining portion of food
into her mouth, my wife turned the bag over to read the fine print
ingredients – I think she had to stop for air. Instantly she gasped, “Why the
hell did you buy this!  It’s loaded with high-fructose corn syrup!”  High
fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is fat fertilizer on steroids.   And she knows
it…One very fit Mom, she keeps a lean and muscular build by avoiding
grocery store fat traps. Her eating came to a screeching halt.

HFCS transforms people into eating machines.  Once consumed, it sets into
motion a chemical cascade that begins with spiked insulin and ends with
feel-good molecules known as endorphins.  Intoxicated with artificial feel-
good, our brains are unable to sense overeating and demand more, more,
more. The excess calories get stored in your bottom – big time. Ultra-
sensitive to the Frankenfood induced pig-out, I’ve even heard of kids
accidentally taking bites out of their fingers when under the influence of
HFCS. Worse  yet, many children who over-indulge on products containing
HFCS eventually become diabetic.

From beef jerky to bread and even spaghetti sauce, HFCS has infiltrated
most foods and turned each one into a fat trap. Avoid it at all cost! But
these are not the only traps that await you.

Fat free labels hoodwink millions of unsuspecting victims. They have been a
gold mine for the food industry since 1993. The obese seek out this label in
hopes of waking up skinny. It never happens, but this doesn’t stop them
from getting ensnared over and over again. I can here the rational, “It just
seems so plausible; I’m fat, I should eat fat free foods.”  Wrong.

After the fat is removed, sugar is added. Sugar is great for a birthday party,
that’s it. Like HFCS, it is nothing more than fat fertilizer and a heart attack
waiting to happen. Look for it listed as sucrose, dextrose, or cane sugar on
the labels of your favorite food.  Then find something else, like an all-
natural food high in healthy fat!

Healthy fat – which you can find in grass fed beef, seeds, nuts, avocados
and eggs – is essential for proper growth, development, and maintenance of
good health. It provides your body with vital energy without causing you to
gain weight. In sharp contrast to carbohydrates, sugar, and trans fats,
healthy fats tell your body to burn fat and makes you feel fuller quicker. Add
them to your grocery list.

This trap gets most weekend warriors: sports bars, protein powders, and
sugar free foods. Each and every one of them is loaded with drugs disguised
as sweeteners, AKA artificial sweeteners.  The belief that these nicely
packaged foods and drinks are healthy for you is a perfect example of how
marketing strategies supersede medical science and common sense.

When consumed, artificial sweeteners make your body lose its natural ability
to count calories. If athletes cannot distinguish between proper eating and
over eating caused by artificial flavors, then they will never reach their fat
loss or muscle building goals, period. Exercise becomes a waste of time.
Artificial flavors include sucralose (Splenda), aspartame, acesulfame K,
saccharin, and neotame.

Beef, it’s what’s for dinner, along with the fat trap MSG (monosodium
glutamate). MSG has several aliases you can be on the lookout for, including
hydrolyzed vegetable protein, hydrolyzed protein, hydrolyzed plant protein,
plant protein extract, sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, yeast extract,
textured protein, autolyzed yeast, and hydrolyzed oat flour.

The white, crystalline amino acid is made in a lab then added to meat
products (and most canned or packaged foods) under the auspices of
“enhancing flavor.”  One small problem: It doesn’t have any flavor. It just
enhances overeating. But anything that enhances the bottom line is labeled
as enhancing flavor.

Once consumed, the fat fertilizer works by spiking insulin and lowering those
hormones that ward off obesity, premature aging, and diabetes: IGF-1 and
human growth hormone. And if that doesn’t scare you, it can be damaging to
brain cells. Consider the shocking findings by German scientists who recently
warned that Germany should abandon the use of MSG at once. Why? They
found that pregnant mothers consuming this fat trap were giving birth to
children who were insulin resistant.

Apparently, fetuses can be doomed to overeating for life thanks to neuronal
damage caused by MSG being consumed by Mom. The damage was most
prevalent among a specialized group of nerve cells in the medulla oblongata,
thalamus, or hypothalamus of the brain.  All of these areas control proper
eating and metabolism. Once damaged, children are born metabolically
handicapped, for life. This might explain the drastic increases in childhood
obesity worldwide.

Some things are worth dying for. Fat traps are not. If you want to live thin
and slim or just avoid eating your body weight in beef, be alert to these
common grocery store fat traps. You might have to dedicate an extra 20
minutes to shopping. But after that, you’ll never fall victim to them again.

...... and we wonder why there is an epidemic of juvenile diabetes in this
country? And so many other chronic illnesses? Eating REAL FOOD is the only
answer!

Point to Ponder #4 -- The Meaning of Informed Consent
[Radiation Dangers] by Ralph W. Moss, PhD
             http:
//www.cancerdecisions.com/052007.html

Sophisticated medical imaging techniques such as CT scans have to a large
extent replaced the traditional physical examination as the mainstay of
diagnosis. In 2006, almost 60 million CT scans were performed in the US
alone. Without any doubt, this kind of imaging has helped save countless
lives. But there is another and more disquieting side to CT scanning that is
seldom discussed. Like any imaging technique that uses ionizing radiation,
CT is capable of causing cancer.

In an article in this week's British Medical Journal, entitled "CT Scanning:
Too Much of a Good Thing, " Steven Birnbaum, a New Hampshire radiologist,
expresses alarm over what he calls "the epidemic of exposure to diagnostic
radiation," and warns that many doctors - including radiologists - have only
very limited knowledge of the dosages involved in medical imaging. Worse,
many seem to be unaware of the potential consequences of such exposure
(Birnbaum 2007).

The National Academy of Sciences report on the biological effects of ionizing
radiation (known as BEIR VII) offers perhaps the most thorough and
definitive scientific analysis of the risks involved in diagnostic medical
imaging. According to this report, previous estimates have seriously
understated the risks involved. "Every exposure to radiation produces a
corresponding increase in cancer risk," the report states. The report
calculates that a spiral CT scan of the abdomen exposes a patient to a
radiation dose of approximately 10 mSv, which carries with it a 1 in 1000 risk
of developing cancer. The risk for women and children is a great deal higher;
for children, such a scan would carry a 1 in 500 risk of developing cancer.

Why has the contribution of diagnostic imaging to the subsequent
development of cancer been so trivialized by the radiology profession? One
reason is that many of the estimates of potential harm from medical imaging
have been drawn from old studies that predated the sophisticated
technology available today. However, the BEIR VII study, published in 2005,
focuses specifically on current diagnostic imaging, and its conclusions cannot
be dismissed as pertaining only to older machinery and outdated techniques.

The principle of informed consent in medicine requires that patients should
be given full explanations of potential risks as well as the potential benefits
of any proposed intervention. Until now, it has not been customary for
patients to be told that there is any appreciable risk inherent in medical
imaging. But there is no longer any excuse for radiologists to be unaware of
these risks, nor to refrain from disclosing them to patients.

The efforts of Dr. Birnbaum to educate his fellow radiologists are admirable.
As he states so trenchantly in his British Medical Journal article: "It is time
that medicine in all specialties became aware of the epidemic of exposure to
diagnostic radiation and did something about it."

...... as Dr Moss points out, CAT scans, and other radiographic forms of
diagnosis, are very important and can save lives. If it is imperative that you
or a family member undergo such diagnostic tools, Vitamin C loading, such
as with Dynamite
Hiscorbadyne, can help reduce the dangers as can plenty
of phytochemicals as found in fresh vegetable/green drinks or at the very
least, "green" powders such as Dynamite's
Herbal Green.

Point to Ponder #5 - Best Acupressure Points for
Tension Headaches by Dr. Ben Kim
http://drbenkim.com/tension-
headache-acupressure.html

In considering the presenting symptoms of the many people I have treated
over the past ten years, I can say with certainty that headaches are among
the most frequently reported health complaints. And the vast majority of
headaches that I have diagnosed and treated have been tension-type
headaches.

Tension-type headaches involve dull or pressure-like pain in and around your
temples, forehead, scalp, or the back of your neck. Often times, the pain
associated with a tension-type headache will feel like it is being created by
a band of pressure that is tightening around your head.

Although emotional stress, anxiety, and depression are among the most
common causes of chronic, intermittent tension-type headaches, tension
headaches can also be caused by pure physical stressors, such as poor
posture, sleeping with your neck in an awkward position, or any type of
physical injury that has caused muscles in and around your head and neck to
become tight.

Unlike migraine and cluster headaches, tension-type headaches tend to
respond quickly to a few physical measures. What follows are the key
recommendations that I typically share with patients who are looking to
overcome chronic tension-type headaches via simple physical measures:

  • Spend a minimum of 20 minutes each day in a session of meditation,
deep relaxation, or prayer. Doing so can help to alleviate emotional
stressors that may be contributing to your tension-type headaches. For
meditation and relaxation sessions, I have found EarthRain to be an
    enormously effective tool.

  • Be mindful of positions that your neck and head are forced to take on
for extended periods throughout the day. Strive to position your neck
and head in such a way that you do not feel tension in your eyes, neck,
or shoulders. Reading and writing with your neck bent down and to one
side are killer culprits - do what you can to minimize this posture.

  • Upon receiving approval from your primary health care provider, consider
applying manual pressure to the following acupuncture points:

    1) Gall Bladder 20 (GB-20): Located behind your head, in the first
major depression that you can feel below the base of your skull, about
two finger widths away from the midline of your neck. For those with
knowledge of human anatomy: This point is at the junction of the
occipital and nuchal regions, in a depression that lies between the
origins of the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles. It is
approximately at the level of the lower margin of the external occipital
protuberance. Application of pressure to GB-20 is meant to affect:
    Semispinalis capitis muscle
    Splenius capitis muscle
    Rectus capitis posterior muscle
    Obliquus capitis superior muscle
    Greater occipital nerve
    Less occipital nerve
    Suboccipital nerve (C1)
Motor fibers from dorsal rami of upper cervical nerves
Branches of the occipital artery and tributaries of the companion
    vein

    2) Belly of Your Temporalis Muscle*: Located in the center of your
temple region. Palpate this region with your first and middle fingers
pressed closely together until you find a tender, muscular zone. If you
have trouble locating this point, place your fingers against your temples
and then clench down on your molars a few times - you should feel the
main muscle belly of your temporalis muscles bulge in and out. For
those with knowledge of human anatomy, pressure on the belly of the
temporalis muscle is meant to affect:
Deep temporal nerves that branch off from the third division
    (mandibular) of the trigeminal nerve
Cutaneous branches of the greater occipital nerve
Deep temporal artery and companion vein

    3) Large Intestine 4 (LI-4): Located in the soft, fleshy web that sits
    between your thumb and forefinger.
For those with knowledge of human anatomy, this point is meant to
    affect:
A muscular branch of the median nerve
The deep branch of the ulnar nerve
Proper palmer digital nerves from the first common palmar digital
    nerve
The superficial branch of the radial nerve
Tributary branches of the cephalic vein, the radial artery, and the
first dorsal metacarpal artery and companion veins

For optimal results, use your fingers and/or thumbs to massage these points
on both sides of your body for a few minutes at a time, up to several times
a day. When you correctly locate these points, you should feel some
tenderness when you apply pressure to them. Apply enough
pressure/massage to create a mild, dull, and possibly achy sensation.

If you are not sure about the location of GB-20 and LI-4, I highly recommend
that you take a look at the following book, the best of its kind:
Acupressure's Potent Points: a Guide to Self-Care for Common Ailments

I recommend this as a must-have reference book for every person who is
interested in natural health remedies, as it provides excellent illustrations of
all of the major acupressure points that I use to treat a wide variety of
health challenges. I will continue to refer to various points that are
illustrated in this book as I write more articles on how to use acupressure to
address different health challenges.

Please note: you should never receive acupressure or acupuncture
treatments while pregnant. Certain points, such as SP-6 can cause uterine
contractions. Also, acupressure should never be applied to legs that have
varicose veins. Applying pressure or massage to varicose veins can
potentially lead to a pulmonary embolism. You should always consult with
your primary health care provider before you begin applying acupressure to
yourself or others.

If you find that consistent application of the suggestions provided in this
article do not lead to significant improvement with your headaches, you
should consult with your primary health care provider to rule out other less
common causes of pain and discomfort in your head and neck regions.

* The belly of your temporalis muscle does not contain a classically defined
acupuncture meridian point. It is a point that I have found through personal
clinical experience to be an effective treatment site for tension-type
headaches.

Menu of the Month - Father's Day Special
This meal is in memory of my father Alex Kempner, who was a transplanted
Bostonian. Mother hated beans but did allow him to enjoy a monthly
"Boston" dinner while she, and we girls, would have some Chicken a la King
or somesuch. I took on my mother's bean prejudice reinforced by the beans
we had at school which were canned mush that always ended up in my
empty milk carton. It was not until my husband shared with me the real joy
of beans that I found out that beans could actually be delicious plus being a
really inexpensive way to gain good nutrition for our ever-growing family. At
some point in there when visiting the folks, I persuaded their cook, Ester, to
show me how to make Dad's favorite meal. I have adjusted her recipes to
suit new awareness of nutrition and my way of cooking.

Boston Lettuce Salad w/ Capers
Boston Baked Beans & Brown Bread
     Creamed or Grilled Corn
    Maple Pudding

Boston Lettuce Salad w/ Capers
Whisk together or combine in a shaker jar: 1/4 cup mayonnaise, 1 pressed
clove garlic, 1T whole grain brown mustard, juice of 1lemon, 1/4 cup extra
virgin olive oil, salt/pepper to taste. Whisk or shake until well combined. Cut
1 head of cleaned Boston lettuce into 4 wedges and place on plates. Drizzle
with the prepared dressing and sprinkle with 1-2T capers.

Boston Baked Beans
Rinse 2 cups of dried navy beans, add water to 2-3 inches over the beans
and let soak overnight. Drain and rinse; add fresh water to deeply cover and
cook until just tender either in a pressure cooker or on top of the stove. Or
use some good, canned organic beans instead. Measure out 2 cups
cooking/canned liquid, adding water or broth if needed and pour into oven-
proof "bean pot." Add 1/2 cup organic blackstrap molasses,1/3 cup @ agave
syrup and ACV, 1 tsp dried mustard (or 1T grainy brown prepared) mustard,
4oz diced salt pork, 1 diced onion and cooked beans. Cover; bake in 300
oven for 5 to 7 hours, adding more liquid if needed. Or put it all into a crock
pot to avoid oven heat.

Steamed Boston Brown Bread
This is traditionally made in cans, but Ester made hers in a double boiler. I've done it both ways, but
really like the top of the stove method best. Of course the "canned" bread was certainly handy on
camping trips!
Mix together 1/2 cup @ rye and wheat flour and corn meal, 1/2 tsp salt, and
1 tsp baking soda in a large bowl. Sour a cup of raw whole milk by adding a
teaspoon of ACV to it, and allowing it to sit for about half an hour at room
temperature. Add the soured milk to the flour mixture, stir, and then add a
generous third of a cup of organic blackstrap molasses and mix thoroughly
before adding 2/3cup  raisins. Butter the top of a double boiler generously,
and pour in the mixture. Cover, and put over gently boiling water for two
hours. I use a stainless bowl that fits into a 2-qt saucepan, not an actual
double boiler. This requires no attention until it is done.

Creamed Corn
Dad just loved his creamed corn. Ester always used fresh when available which was often in
Southern California. When it was not, she used canned. Personally I won't touch canned corn but I
sure make good use of the frozen kernels!
In a pan over medium heat, saute 1/2 cup minced onion in 2T butter until
softened; add 2.5 cups corn kernels, 1/2 cup cream, 1 tsp NTM salt, 1T
agave syrup, pinch nutmeg, 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper.  Cook stirring
over medium heat until the mixture is thickened, and corn is cooked through.
Remove from heat, and serve immediately.
OR just grill some corn but butter it with the seasoned butter.

Maple Pudding
Dad, and the rest of us, too, loved apple pie or apple crisp, or vanilla icecream with chunky hot
cinammon-y apple sauce over it. But sometimes Ester would make this special maple pudding of
which we all partook with great delight.
Beat together: 1 cup  @ whole milk & maple syrup, 1 egg, 1 heaping T
arrowroot, pinch of salt, ¼ stick butter and place in top of a double-boiler.
Cook on top of boiling waster, stirring occasionally, until thick.
Partially cool and pour into pudding dishes.

Words of Wisdom .... The Cowboy vs The Smartass
(Thanks, Nancy!)

A young, well-educated man on a business trip gets on a plane to find
himself seated next to an older, weathered man in a western snap shirt,
faded jeans and a cowboy hat. Thinking himself above the old cowboy, the
young man decides to make sport of him.

"You know," he says, "I've heard these flights go much more quickly if you
strike up a conversation with a fellow passenger. So, let's talk."

The cowboy looks at him wryly and says, "Well I s'pose that'd  be all right.
What'd ya like to discuss?"

"Oh, I don't know," says the young man with a hint of sarcasm, "How about
nuclear proliferation?"

"Hmm," says the cowboy. "That could be an interesting topic. But, let me
ask you a question first. Horses, cows, and deer all eat the same stuff---
grass. Yet, a deer passes little pellets, a cow turns out a flat patty, and a
horse makes muffins of dried poop. Why do you suppose that is?"

Dumbfounded, the young man replies, "I haven't the slightest idea."

"So tell me then," says the cowboy with a smile, "How is it that you feel
qualified to discuss nukes when you don't know shit?"
