Book Report - Why Gender Matters: What Parents and
Teachers need to Know About the Emerging Science of Sex
Differences
by Leonard Sax, MD, PhD - Gender differences in
children go far beyond the obvious. Did you know that girls
actually hear better than boys? Did you know that boys cannot
talk about their feelings because they literally have no connection
to the amygdalla where the seat of emotions lie? Most of us have
felt that males and females were "wired" differently, and it turns
out that they are! This book could have a profound effect on the
way we both teach and parent our children - it is that important!

Did You Know?  from http://www.healthynewsletter.com

Points to Ponder

newsid=25017   Flouride chemicals leach lead into Water
    Supplies

  • More on teflon-coated cookware - Even the government is
getting smart about teflon! It appears DuPont Co. has cooked
up some trouble, for a federal grand jury has slapped the
company with a subpoena -- via a request from the U.S. Justice
Department's Environmental Crimes Section -- regarding the use
of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a controversial chemical used
    to make Teflon non-stick coatings.

And the subpoena comes only a month after Dupont agreed to a
settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that
it failed to disclose health safety information about PFOA for 20
years. Further, while a DuPont spokesman claimed no specific
charges have been spelled out yet, the federal grand jury
requested documents that were previously turned over to the
EPA. The company must turn over the materials by late June.
According to the EPA: PFOA remains in humans for years; small
amounts of the chemical are believed to be present in a large
proportion of the American public.

Evidence has shown the chemical can cause cancers in rats; the
report said PFOA targets the liver in rats and could increase
cholesterol and triglyceride levels in humans. A small ray of hope:
DuPont has previously announced plans to replace PFOA in some
products by late 2006.

And Dr. Mercola states that since their original article ran in
February 2005, they have received dozens of reports of people's
bizarre symptoms that have completely resolved once they
stopped using the Teflon non-stick pans. He advises ditching the
pans and avoiding all non-stick finishes. If you plan to continue
using them however, at least refrain from cooking with them at
high heat, or continuing to use them if they been scratched, as
both situations can liberate the toxic chemical perfluorooctanoic
acid (PFOA) into your food.

  • Merck's infant vaccine stirs new controversy - Los Angeles
Times/Newsday, March 8, 2005    Merck told us they had
stopped using mercury preservatives in infant vaccines, but
didn't tell us they would keep distributing the stockpile for two
more years. Merck & Co. has continued to supply infant vaccines
containing a mercury preservative for two years, after declaring
that it had eliminated the chemical. Thimerosal is nearly 50
percent ethyl mercury. Ethyl mercury has largely been
eliminated from most routine childhood vaccines, although it is
present in most flu shots. More than 4,200 parents have filed
claims in the federal Vaccine Injury Compensation Program,
alleging that their children have suffered autism and other
neurological disorders from the mercury in their children's
inoculations. For more information, see the following link: http:

  • Plastics Ingredient and Male Fertility - By MATT CRENSON AP
    National Writer May 27, 2005, 9:04 AM EDT NEW YORK -- A
manmade ingredient of many plastics, cosmetics and other
consumer products may be interfering with prenatal male sexual
    development, new research suggests.

A study of 85 infant boys found a correlation between increased
exposure to some forms of the chemical
phthalate and smaller
penis size and incomplete testicular descent. It is the first time
phthalate has been shown to influence the sexual development of
human males.

"This is clearly something that needs to be examined in a larger
sample," said Shanna Swan, a professor at the University of
Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry who headed the
study. A paper describing the research will appear in a future
issue of Environmental Health Perspectives, a journal of the
National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences.

Swan discussed the findings in an interview Thursday. Previous
experiments in rats indicate that the chemical interferes with
testosterone during gestation, producing a condition known as
"
phthalate syndrome." Rats with the syndrome suffer from genital
birth defects, infertility and testicular cancer.

The human study raises concerns because the infants did not
experience levels even close to the high doses used in rat
experiments. The boys' exposures, measured by analyzing their
mothers' urine during pregnancy, were no higher than those found
among the general population.

The last few decades have seen a rise in the types of birth
defects that would be expected from prenatal testosterone
interference, including
hypospadia, a defect in which the urethra
does not extend to the tip of the penis, and undescended
testicles. Testicular cancer has increased as well, although it is a
different type than rats experience in
phthalate syndrome.

"The results are both groundbreaking and potentially troubling,"
said Russ Hauser, a professor at the Harvard School of Public
Health who was not involved in the research. "A majority of the U.
S. population is exposed to
phthalates at the level measured in
Shanna's study."

The study does not necessarily indicate that the boys were
harmed by their exposure to
phthalate, however, and none of
them exhibited overt birth defects. The researchers found a
correlation between exposure to some forms of
phthalate and a
measurement called the anogenital index -- the distance between
the genitals and the anus.

Though that measurement has no physiological significance by
itself, it is connected to penis size at birth and is "a very good
indicator of internal malformations," said Paul Foster, a senior
fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
Newborn rats and other lab animals with
phthalate syndrome
have unusually short anogenital distances.

A growing body of research suggests that some chemicals used in
consumer products may cause public health problems by
interfering with sex hormones. A study in the current issue of the
journal Endocrinology exposed newborn mice to
bisphenol-A, a
chemical found in plastics and dental sealants, at doses
comparable to those found in the human environment. At puberty
the mice were more likely to develop cancer-related mammary
duct abnormalities. "In humans this would cause breast cancer,"
said Tufts University cell biologist Anna Soto, the study's lead
author.

Smile of the Month ... the power of positive
thinking!!!

A little boy was overheard talking to himself as he strutted
through the backyard, wearing his baseball cap and toting a
ball and bat. "I'm the greatest hitter in the world," he
announced.

Then, he tossed the ball into the air, swung at it, and
missed.

"Strike One!" he yelled. Undaunted, he picked up the ball
and said again, "I'm the greatest hitter in the world!"

He tossed the ball into the air. When it came down he swung
again and missed. "Strike Two!" he cried.

The boy then paused a moment to examine his bat and ball
carefully. He spit on his hands and rubbed them together. He
straightened his cap and said once more, "I'm the greatest
hitter in the world!"

Again he tossed the ball up in the air and swung at it. He
missed. "Strike Three!"

"Wow!" he exclaimed. "I'm also the greatest pitcher in the
world!"

. . . and a gentle reminder

               Ripples  by Author Unknown

My grandfather took me to the fish pond on the farm when I
was about seven, and he told me to throw a stone into the
water. He told me to watch the circles created by the
stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that stone
person.

"You may create lots of splashes in your life but the
waves that come from those splashes will disturb the peace
of all your fellow creatures," he said.

"Remember that you are responsible for what you put in
your circle and that circle will also touch many other
circles. You will need to live in a way that allows the
good that comes from your circle to send the peace of that
goodness to others. The splash that comes from anger or
jealousy will send those feelings to other circles. You
are responsible for both."

That was the first time I realized each person creates the
inner peace or discord that flows out into the world. We
cannot create world peace if we are riddled with inner
conflict, hatred, doubt, or anger. We radiate the feelings
and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we speak them or
not. Whatever is splashing around inside of us is spilling
out into the world, creating beauty or discord with all
other circles of life.

Remember the eternal wisdom:

Whatever You Focus On Expands.
