Book Review -- Now They Call Me Infidel: Why I
Renounced Jihad for America, Israel, and the War on
Terror by Nonie Darwish
"Warning: We are fighting World War III
and don't even know it!" This outspoken Egyptian Moslem woman, who was
born and lived in Egypt until she was 30 when she emigrated to the US, is
raising the clarion call to those of us who are insisting on living like
ostriches. From her own experiences, and that of her extended family, Ms.
Darwish shows the incontrovertible truth of what jihad is all about. Rather
than relying on marginal news reports, this particular perspective shows a
side of middle-eastern culture which should make us all take a very deep
breath before we ponder deeply the ramifications. In addition to reading
this book before you ever cast another political vote, do visit her website:

Did You Know?...   (from various sources)

  • WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT THE EGG? -- The egg has been much
maligned over the years with the popularity of low-fat diets. Recently, a
nutrition conference entitled "Where Would We Be Without the Egg? A
Conference About Nature's Original Functional Food"  was held, and the
abstracts of the presentations were published as a supplement to the
October issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.  Dr.
Clare M. Hasler, Ph.D, of the University of Illinois stated, "it is now known
that there is little if any connection between dietary cholesterol and blood
cholesterol levels…" In addition, Dr. Hasler notes that "…eggs are an
excellent dietary source of many essential (e.g., protein, choline) and non-
essential (e.g., lutein/zeaxanthin) components which may promote
    optimal health."

  • FLUORIDE DICHOTOMY -- The toxicity of fluoride has caused many
countries to rethink the fluoride issue and many have rescinded fluoride in
favor of the health of their people. Those banning fluoride are Sweden,
Norway, Denmark, West Germany (now unified), Italy, Belgium, Austria,
France, and The Netherlands because of its mutagenic, enzyme inhibition,
genetic damage, increased cancer rates, genotoxic properties. Despite
these retractions of fluoride, the US still presses on with the goal to
fluoridate (poison) every community water supply in the United States. All
allopathically-trained dentists are very familiar with the ADA and other
"authoritative" positions on fluoride. They rarely mention its toxic
potential or the few studies revealing increased tooth decay after fluoride
use. The research of Burk and Yiamouyiannis revealed that every major
city with fluoride had increased rates of cancer. Not a fair trade for "good
looking teeth". .... for more information on fluoride, see http://www.
    slweb.org/index.html

  • FDA MATH -- "Zero trans fatty acids? Riiiight. Except when the FDA is
doing the math. As I've noted in previous e-Alerts, the FDA allows food
manufacturers to claim zero trans fats if a product contains less than 0.5
grams of trans fats per serving. Zero point four - it's the new zero!"

  • COD LIVER OIL FOR DEPRESSION -- A DAILY dose of cod liver oil could
reduce feelings of depression, new research suggests. The supplement –
hailed as a superfood for generations – has been found to reduce the risk
of getting the blues by as much as 30 per cent. And the longer that
subjects took cod liver oil, the greater the impact on their mental health.
While those who had it for only five months saw their risk of depression
drop slightly, subjects who took it for a year slashed their risk of
depression by more than a quarter.

  • OMEGA 3'S & PREGNANCY -- Can DHA during pregnancy reduce
problems for kids? Supplementation of women with the omega-3 fatty
acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) during pregnancy could boost the
problem solving abilities of the children, suggests new research. The
research adds to our understanding of how omega-3 play an important
role in the development of the baby in utero, with a wealth of other
studies reporting that a diet rich in the DHA omega-3 fatty acid
(docosahexaenoic acid) during pregnancy and breastfeeding is associated
with a healthy pregnancies as well as the mental and visual development
    of infants.

  • CANCER SOCIETY ADVISES SUPPLEMENTS -- Canadian adults should
consider taking a specific amount of vitamin D, says the Canadian Cancer
Society, basing its new recommendation on an expanding body of
evidence linking the vitamin to reduced risk for colorectal, breast and
prostate cancers. The recommendation coincides with the findings of a
study which found that taking vitamin D supplements and calcium
substantially reduced all cancer risk in post-menopausal women. The four-
year study, conducted by researchers at Creighton University in Nebraska,
initially enrolled 1,180 women who were over the age of 55 and living in a
nine-county rural area of the state. Of the 1,024 who completed the trial,
those randomly assigned to take calcium and vitamin D and who had
higher levels of both in their blood were 77 per cent less likely to develop
cancer after the first year compared to those taking placebos or calcium
alone. The Canadian Cancer Society released its recommendation Friday
for adults in Canada to consider taking a vitamin D supplement of 1,000
international units daily during fall and winter.

  • AN APPLE PEEL A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY -- Apple peel may
be more nutritious than apple flesh for people trying to keep cancer at
bay, according to researchers at the Cornell Institute, New York , US .
Researchers from Cornell claim to have identified a dozen compounds
called triterpenoids in apple peel that either inhibited or killed cancer cells
in laboratory cultures. "We found that several compounds have potent
anti-proliferative activities against human liver, colon and breast cancer
cells and may be partially responsible for the anti-cancer activities of
whole apples," said Rui Hai Liu, Cornell associate professor of food
    science.

  • THE DOWNSIDE OF EXERCISE -- According to the medical journal,
Lancet, aerobics is causing deadly artery clogs and heart disease in those
who've never had heart trouble. And The American Journal of Cardiology
reports that jogging is causing runners to drop dead from heart attacks -
some right in the middle of their daily jog! Their autopsies show severe
coronary artery disease. (Wasn't the jogging supposed to cure that?)
Other studies are showing that any regular, strenuous exercise actually
does damage to your heart and can hurt other muscles too. The bottom
line? Over-exercising is just plain unhealthy.

  • BE A GOOD PATIENT AND EAT YOUR CHOLESTEROL -- For more than
20 years, William Campbell Douglass, M.D. reminded Americans that
cholesterol is not a terrifying toxin, but a life-saving nutrient. Your own
body makes it when your foods don't provide it. And studies now show
that if you're cholesterol-starved, you will raise your risk of massive
strokes. Example: Not only are eggs not guilty of causing heart disease,
they've been proven to prevent it. An enormous study of 800,000 people
has shown that egg-eaters have a much lower rate of heart attacks and
strokes than egg-avoiders. As for raw, go ahead and indulge in steak
tartare, and enjoy raw eggs in your mayonnaise and Caesar salad. Raw
and rare meat contain life-saving nutrients that overcooking destroys.

  • STRENGTHENING A BROKEN HEART -- The National Institute of Health
(NIH) sponsored a two day seminar entitled "Carnitine [acetyl-L- carnitine
AKA ALCAR]: The Science behind a Conditionally Essential Nutrient".
Highlights include: Those who had suffered from a heart attack, ALCAR
supplementation (2-3 g/day over 4-8 weeks) resulted in a reduction in the
amount of damage to the heart muscle. ALCAR reduced the incidence of
angina and cardiac arrhythmias as well as the need for anti-angina and
anti-arrhythmic medications. ALCAR (2g/ day for 6 months) increased
exercise capacity among the elderly and patients with angina.Natural
sources of carnitine include foods of animal origin, such as meat and dairy
    products.

  • BIOLOGICAL MUSCLE LOSS HAPPENS -- Research by Irwin Rosenberg,
M.D. at the legendary Tufts University in Boston found everyone from
athletes to couch potatoes loses muscle at the exact same rate: about
1% a year starting at 45 years old.  Younger bodies make creatine from
protein, but this mechanism starts failing in mid-life. At that time, taurine
also becomes more necessary. Researchers have also discovered that
bromelain increases the function of both creatine and taurine. These
additions, along with a good broad mineral base, works best along with
normal aerobic exercise such as walking, dancing, swimming, etc.

  • REVERSING THOUGHTS ON BLOOD PRESSURE -- A Ben Gurion
University, Israel, study showed that patients over 70 with what modern
standards call "mild hypertension" (now considered to be 115/75) actually
thought more clearly and creatively than those with lower blood pressure.
Both men and women in the nearly 500-subject study whose blood
pressure was deemed high enough to warrant treatment with prescription
drugs - and also those with clinically uncontrolled (untreated)
hypertension - performed significantly better on tests of cognitive
function, memory, concentration, and visual retention. Only in tests of
verbal fluency was there no meaningful scoring advantage for the high-BP
group... Those with "normal" blood pressure tested the worst of all three
groups in the study. Similar studies in younger test populations yielded
no difference in performance based on blood pressure. The study
concluded that physicians need to balance their efforts to control what
they perceive as risk factors for heart disease with patients' quality-of-life
concerns - like mental sharpness and creativity.

  • NON-DRUG RELIEF FOR ARTHRITIS -- Whereas drugs such as
cortisone, aspirin and ibuprofen degrade joints if taken over a period of
time, scientists at Cardiff University (Wales, UK) have confirmed what
thousands of people with arthritis have believed for years. Cod liver oil is
effective in treating joint pain and can slow, even reverse the destruction
of joint cartilage. Our most recent work shows that by exposing human
osteoarthritic cartilage to cod liver oil in the laboratory for just 24 hours
we can turn off, or reverse, the action of the derogative enzymes and
    inflammatory factors affecting the tissue.

  • DEATH BY HPV VACCINE -- Amid controversy over state legislatures in
the U.S. requiring young girls to take Gardasil, Merck's new vaccine for
human papillomavirus (HPV), severe side effects are being reported. 1,637
adverse reactions have been reported by Judicial Watch, a public interest
watchdog, including three girls who died shortly after receiving the
immunization. Judicial Watch obtained the reports from the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration using the Freedom of Information Act. In Australia,
25 girls who had just received their first injection of the vaccine
experienced headache, nausea, and dizziness. In some cases, the
problems were so severe that they were hospitalized. Shares of the
vaccine's Australian developer, CSL, fell after the incident was reported in
    the news.

Point to Ponder #1 -  The Chemnitz Program - As
Important as 10 Years Ago by Matthew Rath, MD
From Dr. Rath Health Alliance e-alert, http://www.rath.co.uk.

Today, on June 21, 2007, is the 10th anniversary of the Chemnitz program.
On to 21, 1997, I had given my first major presentation in Europe - in the
City Hall of the German town Chemnitz.

This talk marked not only the beginning of our work in Europe, but was also
important for another reason: for the first time in history, someone dared to
name the pharmaceutical industry as what it is - an industry that is thriving
on the promotion of diseases.

Amazingly, never before the sobering analysis had been made publicly that
the pharmaceutical industry - the very industry that for decades had built a
worldwide monopoly as the "exclusive purveyor of health" - that this very
industry is the biggest obstacle to achieve human health!

Those among you who did not know us, yet, at that time can look up this
programmatic speech on the web site of our foundation at
http://www4.dr-rath-foundation.org/PHARMACEUTICAL_BUSINESS/
The_Chemnitz_Programme/chemnitz15.htm.

There had been a good reason that this talk was given in Germany. After
all, this country had been the leading export nation of pharmaceutical
products at that time. Thus, it was right in the lion's cage where these
appalling facts were revealed for the first time.

After this exposure, things moved fast. Only 16 months later, the reign of
German Chancellor Helmut Kohl ended. For 16 years this man had been the
"political conductor" orchestrating the interests of the pharmaceutical
investment business to cement its global grip on human health. Moreover,
less than two years after this speech, Germany was no longer the leading
export nation of the pharmaceutical business with disease.

In the 10 years since Chemnitz, the perception of the people of the world
about the pharmaceutical business changed fundamentally. While a decade
ago, this industry still paraded like a shiny Rolls-Royce on a sunny day -
today all that false glamour is gone. Justified public criticism of the
unscrupulous business with disease has become a national pastime in many
countries.

One thing is clear: without our continuous public health education this
global perception change would not have taken place. Without our global
efforts there would be no critical books on the best seller lists of the New
York Times (e.g. Dr. Angell's "The Truth About the Drug Companies") nor
any critical movies by John LeCarre ("The Constant Gardner") or Michael
Moore ("Sicko").

Without our global health education campaign vitamins and other
micronutrients would still not be considered genuine alternatives to the
largely ineffective and economically strangulating pharmaceutical business
with disease. These natural health approaches would still be like a
"sleeping beauty", silenced by the economic interests of the multibillion
dollar business with patented pharmaceutical drugs.

This is why today, on this anniversary, we have every reason to look back
with pride on our work. Through our courageous and persistent efforts we
have helped thousands, perhaps, millions of people - and saved the lives of
many of them.

This is day is also a good occasion to look forward to the next stage of our
mission. Our goal is to establish our achievements as irreversible and to
build a lasting global health care system that places the health interests of
millions of people above the profit interests of a few pharmaceutical
shareholders.

Also in the name of Dr. Niedzwiecki, I would like to thank all our
employees, the members of our global Health Alliance and our friends all
over the world - without your commitment we would not be celebrating this
anniversary.

I'm looking forward to realize - together with you - our next common goal:
"Health for All by the Year 2020."

Sincerely, Dr. Rath

Point to Ponder #2 - Sanitizer safe for skin, not
stomachs by Jeremy P. Meyer Denver Post Staff
Writer
http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_6237602

The importance of clean hands has boosted sales of hand sanitizers and
also has led to an increase in the number of calls to poison centers about
children swallowing the gels.

"We get a lot of calls on it," said Mary Hilko, public-education coordinator
with the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Center.

Last year, 238 people in Colorado called the poison center with confirmed
exposures of ingesting hand sanitizer, Hilko said.

Now making the rounds on the Internet is an e-mail about a 4-year-old
Oklahoma girl being rushed to an emergency room with signs of alcohol
poisoning after licking hand sanitizer.

The e-mail serves as a cautionary tale for parents and has some validity,
according to the websiteSnopes.com, which debunks or confirms urban
legends.

Most hand gels contain about 62 percent ethanol, according to the American
Association of Poison Control Centers.

A child weighing 66 pounds would have to consume about an ounce of
sanitizer to achieve a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent, according
to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, which compiles data
from 61 poison centers.

A lick of the gel would not increase levels of alcohol markedly, but parents
should be wary, Hilko said. There have been no deaths associated with the
sanitizers.

Only three of 238 cases in Colorado were told to seek medical attention,
and five calls were reported from a health-care facility, Hilko said.

Nationwide, 11,914 people under age 6 ingested hand sanitizer last year,
with about 500 cases that resulted in minor toxicity and 20 cases of
moderate toxicity, according to the poison-control centers organization.

The increase coincides with the boost in hand-sanitizer sales in the United
States.

Between 2005 and 2006, sales rose 14 percent to more than $70 million in
U.S. supermarkets and drugstores, according to the market firm AC Nielsen.

The largest seller is Purell, with $36.6 million in sales in 2006.

Purell's website says that use of its product by children should be
supervised and that the gel contains an additive that makes it taste bitter
and undesirable to ingest. Purell is made by Johnson & Johnson.

"We consider it relatively safe," Hilko said. "We always like parents to keep
things out of reach and locked up. Teach kids never to eat anything without
checking with an adult."

For more information or concerns or questions, call the Rocky Mountain
Poison and Drug Center at 888-222-1222.

....OK, let me get this straight. We don't want our kids to get sick from
germs so we offer them poison with which to clean their hands. Right?
Pretty fuzzy logic especially since it has been proven that anti-bacterial
soaps lead to strengthening bacteria rather than humans. However, I see
two options. 1) Build our children's immunity so they can live in the natural
world by feeding them Real Food and avoiding  toxins which deplete their
immune systems' ability to ward off normal "germs" (see the balance of
this website for suggestions). 2) If you think you simply HAVE to use an
antibacterial hand gel, use only a natural one such as Melaleuca's Clear
Defense which is available in a pump bottle for desk tops and a travel size
for fanny packs.

Point to Ponder #3 - Equine Research Might Help Avert
Future Injuries by Laura Bailey
http://www.coloradoan.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?
AID=/20070629/CSUZONE01/706290322/1002/NEWS01

A study at one of Colorado State University's equine research centers could
help elite horse race owners predict whether a horse has a predisposition
for injury, helping owners prevent catastrophic breakdown on the track.

Researchers at the Gail Holmes Equine Orthopaedic Research Center are
looking at the blood of hundreds of race horses from California to determine
if elevated levels of certain biomarkers occur in conjunction with the onset
of joint disease.

The work is one of several revolutionary studies going on at the center that
could have a major impact on the racing world by helping owners prevent
career-ending injuries.

"We see so many times that many injuries that appear to be spontaneous
are really the result of eventual ongoing sequences," said Ed Bowen,
president of the Kentucky-based Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation,
which is funding the projects.

The foundation has funded nine research projects at the center worth more
than $600,000 in the past three years.

The study asks whether certain biomarkers point to weak or stressed
articular cartilage before an injury occurs.

Eventually, the hope is that the test will be manufactured and race-horse
owners will be able to periodically check their horses for potential onset of
joint disease.

"It would be a great early warning system that a trainer can use to sort of
back off and let the horse rest," Bowen said.

The test would be much like blood tests that predict the risk for heart
disease in cardiac patients, said Christopher Kawcak, a CSU professor and
equine surgeon at the center.

Kawcak is engaged in another injury prevention study in which he is using a
computer model of a horse leg created from an MRI to determine which
conditions cause ankle breakdowns in race horses.

With the model, he will be able to see how the digital leg reacts to various
pressures.

The information could determine ways to prevent fractures, from
conditioning techniques to whether certain types of horseshoes and tracks
can contribute to injuries.

Kawcak's work also could help race owners diagnose minute external signs
of an internal problem before the problem results in a breakdown, Bowen
said.

While horse trainers are intuitive at knowing when a horse may be
experiencing pain, swelling or the onset of a joint problem, this will give
them a scientific tool, Bowen said.

Kawcak said another benefit of the modeling is that it can help researchers
understand what makes the perfect joint and whether a horse will be a
good race horse or one that likely is to sustain injuries.

"This will provide objective information on which horses will do well,"
Kawcak said.

... Once again high-tech and lots of money paid by special interests
appears to take precedence over common sense like 1) breakdown is likely
when you run babies, and 2) breakdown is even more likely when you feed
straight alfalfa and gallons of grain. See the
Equine Nutrition section here
on my site for nutritional basics and then go to the

Point to Ponder #4 -- "Organic" Foods Poised to Poison
Millions of Unsuspecting Consumers.
http://www.
democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/oca/campaign.jsp?
campaign_KEY=11401

USDA allows 38 toxic ingredients to be labeled "organic."

The USDA's controversial proposal will result in some of the following:
Sausages, brats, and breakfast links labeled as "USDA Organic" will be
allowed to contain intestines from factory farmed animals raised on
chemically grown feed, synthetic hormones, slaughterhouse waste, and
antibiotics.

Anheuser Busch will be allowed to sell its "Organic Wild Hops Beer" without
using any organic hops at all. They would be allowed to use hops grown
with insecticides and pesticides. Yet another reason to just avoid beer all
together, except for maybe the occasional Newcastle Brown Ale to celebrate
a friend getting off prescription drugs (i.e. getting off Lipitor and blood
pressure meds).

Let's face it. People have to stop being blind consumers led by tricky
government labels. Engage your brain and make healthy decisions fueled by
common sense. Organic does not equate to being healthy.

Seriously, stores are selling "organic sugar" and "organic soda." And obese
people waddle in by the millions to consume the fat fertilizer under the
hypnotic trance of "organic" advertising.  Learn more and take action at
Democracy in Action - website above.

..... as we've said over and over, check labels even at your health food
store! Best thing is to avoid most processed foods entirely and eat mainly
whole REAL foods. Go one step further and grow as much as you can
yourself so you know exactly what you're getting. The optimum step would
be using
Dynamite fertilizers!

Point to Ponder #5 - The Sunscreen Myth: How
Sunscreen Products Actually Promote Cancer by Dr.
Joseph Mercola
http://v.mercola.com/blogs/public_blog/The-Sunscreen-Myth--How-
Sunscreen-Products-Actually-Promote-Cancer-22358.aspx

The hard-hitting NewsTarget piece, NewsTarget.com June 15, 2007,
explains in detail how the idea that sunscreen prevents cancer is nothing
more than a myth promoted by industries seeking to make a profit off of
human suffering.

In fact, sunscreen actually promotes cancer by blocking your body's
absorption of ultraviolet radiation, and therefore blocking the production of
vitamin D in your skin.

Studies have shown that vitamin D can prevent as many as 77 of all
cancers. In addition, most sunscreen lotions also contain cancer-causing
chemicals.

A portion of the profits from the sale of these lotions is then donated to
organizations such as the American Cancer Society, which in turn runs public
service ads encouraging the use of sunscreens.

Proper nutrition is a better way to prevent sunburn then sunscreen lotion.
Berries and microalgae such as spirulina, astaxanthin, and blue-green algae
can make the body naturally resistant to sunburn, as well as similar
radiation damage to the eyes and optic nerve.

Dr. Mercola's Comment: How many people know that not getting enough
sun KILLS 50,000 people from cancer deaths every year in the US alone?

The myth that the sun is detrimental to your health, and that sunscreen is
a necessity to guard against cancer is one of the most pervasive hoaxes in
our society today.

As this article points out, this myth can be traced back to the two
industries that benefit the most: the cancer industry and the sunscreen
manufacturers. These two giant profit-makers tag-team efforts which keep
the unsuspecting public in a trance.

Not only do sunscreens promote cancer by blocking your vitamin D
production, they are also likely carcinogens all by themselves. A study in
the April 2004 Journal of Chromatography found that there is significant
penetration of all sunscreen agents they studied into the skin.

So when you use most sunscreens, your body is absorbing synthetic
chemicals, and with experts' recommendations to apply generous amounts
of the product every few hours, you will likely be absorbing a fair amount.
Some of these chemicals are quite dangerous. Octyl methoxycinnamate
(OMC), which is present in 90 percent of sunscreen brands, was found to
kill mouse cells even at low doses.

Sunburn should always be avoided, but there are many all-natural ways to
protect yourself from sunburn that you can use instead of resorting to the
toxic infusions of commercial sunscreens.

Boosting your skin's "internal sunscreen" from within with effective
antoxidants from whole fresh vegetables and fruits like goji berries (not the
juice), raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, are far healthier options.
Additionally, slathering on some aloe vera gel can also be helpful.

If you're still hooked on the idea of a cream, there are safer natural
sunscreen products that contain no petrochemicals, such as Aubrey's Active
and Green Tea sunblocks. Just remember, although these products are non-
toxic, they still prevent you from metabolizing vitamin D, so use them with
caution.

I recommend testing your vitamin D levels to make sure you're not deficient
before resorting to sunscreen of any kind.

For more information about the vital importance of vitamin D from sunlight,
please review my article Reduce Your Risk of Cancer With Sunlight
Exposure, if you haven't already seen it. You might also want to keep an
eye out for my forthcoming book, Dark Deception, which is due to be
published in 2008. It will take an in-depth look at all of the various issues
relating to sunscreen, cancer, vitamin D, and sunlight.
___________

.... and this is Rowan. Probably the safest way to have healthy skin without
the need for sunscreen but only common sense like hats, long-sleeves, and
avoiding mid-day sun, is to take your Cod Live Oil (Carlson's) daily plus
some really high Omega 3 caps (reduces inflammation) like the Antarctic
Krill recommended by Dr. Mercola. Topically, Dynamite Tan-O-the-Isles is a
superb skin conditioning choice. For more, read my article
Skin Care. For
those few special times when slathered-on sunscreen is unavoidable, try
the one put out by Aubrey Organics or the zinc-based Sun Shades Mineral
Sunblock by Melaleuca (

Point to Ponder #6 - Meditate to Concentrate,
University of Pennsylvania, June 26, 2007
http://www.
sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/06/070625193240.htm

Researchers have found that even short periods of daily meditation can
improve both focus and performance.

Meditation, according to Penn neuroscientist Amishi Jha and Michael Baime,
director of Penn's Stress Management Program, is an active and effortful
process that literally changes the way the brain works.  Their study is the
first to examine how meditation may modify the three subcomponents of
attention, including the ability to prioritize and manage tasks and goals,
the ability to voluntarily focus on specific information and the ability to stay
alert to the environment.

In the Penn study, subjects were split into two categories.  Those new to
meditation, or "mindfulness training," took part in an eight-week course
that included up to 30 minutes of daily meditation.  The second group was
more experienced with meditation and attended an intensive full-time, one-
month retreat.

Researchers found that even for those new to the practice, meditation
enhanced performance and the ability to focus attention.  Performance-
based measures of cognitive function demonstrated improvements in a
matter of weeks.  The study, to be published in the journal Cognitive,
Affective, & Behavioral Neuroscience, suggests a new, non-medical means
for improving focus and cognitive ability among disparate populations and
has implications for workplace performance and learning.

Participants performed tasks at a computer that measured response speeds
and accuracy.  At the outset, retreat participants who were experienced in
meditation demonstrated better executive functioning skills, the cognitive
ability to voluntarily focus, manage tasks and prioritize goals.  Upon
completion of the eight-week training, participants new to meditation had
greater improvement in their ability to quickly and accurately move and
focus attention, a process known as "orienting."  After the one-month
intensive retreat, participants also improved their ability to keep attention
"at the ready."

The results suggest that meditation, even as little as 30 minutes daily,
may improve attention and focus for those with heavy demands on their
time.  While practicing meditation may itself may not be relaxing or restful,
the attention-performance improvements that come with practice may
paradoxically allow us to be more relaxed.

Point to Ponder #7 -- Omega-3 Fatty Acids Key to Cell
Health by Judy Fortin, CNN Medical News correspondent
http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/diet.fitness/07/06/hm.omega.3/index.
html
The name sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, but omega-
3 fatty acids are a necessary part of our diet. "Every cell in the body
requires omega-3 to function normally," says Dr. Andrew Stoll, author of
"The Omega-3 Connection." "They are a class of fats, good fats that are
actually as essential as vitamins to our health."

Researchers discovered that omega-3 protects the heart about 30 years
ago. Doctors now know that the compound controls inflammation and
protects cells by forming part of the cell membrane. "We know that omega-
3 can protect the heart, the lungs, the kidneys, really every organ system
that we know of, including the brain," says Stoll.

The problem is that most Americans don't get enough of the compound in
their diet. Part of the reason, Stoll says, is they don't eat enough fish.

Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines are the best
sources of omega-3 for the diet. For most patients, Stoll recommends one
or two servings of the cooked fish a week. Unlike other fish, which store the
compound in their liver, the four recommended varieties store the
compound in their muscles, which are eaten by humans.  Watch more on
Omega 3s in Health Minute »

While certain fish are loaded with omega-3 and protein, they also contain
some mercury, dioxins and PCBs. "It's a difficult situation to balance out,"
explains Stoll. "You need to eat some fish to be healthy, but if you eat too
much fish, you're putting yourself at risk. ... So most Americans just can't
eat enough fish to get omega-3 in their diet."

Stoll cautions pregnant women, those who are nursing and young children
from eating any fish. He says toxins can be harmful to developing babies
and youngsters.

Stoll suggests taking a daily fish oil supplement instead or finding another
source. Vegetarians, for instance, can get the compound from specially
enriched omega-3 eggs.

Flaxseed is another source of a different type of omega-3. Stoll says it's a
good way to increase your fiber, but flax doesn't offer the same benefits of
the compound found in fatty fish. He also warns that the bodies of two-
thirds of the population cannot convert the omega-3 found in flaxseed.

According to Stoll, "Taking more than three tablespoons a day of raw
flaxseed or ground flaxseed can inhibit the uptake of iodine in the thyroid,
which can produce a goiter or enlargement of the thyroid gland."

While Stoll doesn't call omega-3 a dietary miracle, he does say, "We need
it for optimal health. ... If you have very little omega-3 in your diet, you
will be prone to inflammatory disorders."

..... for years preached by Dr. Mercola and other holistic doctors, the
importance of Omega 3 is now finally CNN mainstream! The best way to
obtain a better Omega 3 ratio in your diet is to avoid all those so-called
"healthy" vegetable oils which in truth are loaded with the inflammatory
Omega 6. In addition to the fish mentioned above, pasture-fed animals (no
grain at all) also offer salmon-high Omega 3. For free-range meats and
dairy, see my human
nutrition page. It has been my opinion for a number of
years that the Factor X spoken of by Dr.Price to which he attributed so
many health benefits, was none other than Omega 3.

Words of Wisdom ....

1) Brains vs. Common Sense
(http://www.gcfl.net)

Mensa is an organization whose members have an IQ of 140 or
higher. A few years ago, there was a Mensa convention in San
Francisco, and several members lunched at a local cafe.

While dining, they discovered that their saltshaker contained pepper and
their pepper shaker was full of  salt. How could they swap the contents of
the bottles without spilling, and using only the implements at hand? Clearly
this was a job for Mensa!

The group debated and presented ideas, and finally came up a brilliant
solution involving a napkin, a straw, and an empty saucer so they called the
waitress over to dazzle her.

"Ma'am," they said, "we couldn't help but notice that the pepper shaker
contains salt and the salt shaker..."

"Oh," the waitress interrupted. "Sorry about that."

She unscrewed the caps of both bottles and switched them.

2) I Wish You Enough (a beautiful blessing that is going around on
the internet - thank you Nancy)

I wish you  enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the
day may appear.

I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.

I  wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.

I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear
bigger.

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.

I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.
