About the Dandelion Photo

Far from being a weed to dig up and destroy as seems the intent of
almost all American homeowners, dandelions are herbs of a high degree.
We ate them with gusto and delight during our "Tarryall Summer" and still
enjoy their piquant taste in salads, along with nasturtiums, and love the
brightness that the flowers bring to those self-same salads.

Dandelions cleanse our livers, lower our blood pressure, rejuvenate us for
spring, reduce water retention and blood pressure through their diuretic
mechanism, improve digestion and nourish us with potassium, vitamin K,
and minerals.

Those of us with organic yards and no dogs, can pick some of the fresh
green leaves (especially the young ones) and add them to a salad. Bitter
greens stimulate our digestion as they hit the bitter receptors at the back
of our tongue which are innervated by the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve
moves bile (and thus toxins) through our livers as well as stimulates the
peristaltic activity that moves the digestive process along. Bitters are
imperative for those with sluggish digestion and constipation.

Older, tougher leaves can be added to any sauteed greens as an added
nutritional boost, and the roots can be dug up in the fall and used as a
liver tonic. So if you REALLY want less dandelions in your yard then just
harvest them every fall. Or make dandelion wine to enjoy all year long! As
one afficianado has enthused, "Dandelion wine is fermented sunshine."

Testimonial - Jack and Dancer and Dynamite!
Here are Jack (18 mos old Anatolian Shepherd) and Dancer (5 weeks) this
morning up on "Goat Mountain".

Both were given death sentences from the vets,
Jack for his Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever last
September, Dancer from navel ill at three days
old (her mom died at her birth). Dancer will be
5 weeks old tomorrow.

Dancer was given her bottle this morning snuggled
in my arms in my recliner (she sleeps in the house
at night) and then she was let out in the pasture
to learn to be a goat (we are working on it daily!) and look where she
decided to go, right to the top of Goat Mountain. (You go girl!)  Jack
knows Dancer is special like him and he does not leave her unattended in
the pasture.

I would happily travel around the world to tell how sick these kids were
and the vet's telling me that their chance of living was slim to none, but
little did they know I had an arsenal of Dynamite products at home and a
Dynamite support team to help me out.

:o)  It's all wonderful.  Marlene Lynch

Did You Know?...   (from various sources)

  • Cranberries, probiotics may fight ulcer-causing bacteria in children
Cranberry juice or probiotics clear the stomach of children of a bacterial
strain known to cause ulcers and cancer, new research reports. Results
from the multicentred, randomised, double-blind, controlled trial
involving 271 children with Helicobacter pylori infection, published in the
journal Nutrition, suggest that drinking cranberry juice or taking
Lactobacillus johnsonii La1 may eradicate the bacteria.

  • Vitamin D helps colorectal cancer patients - Vitamin D may extend the
lives of people with colon and rectal cancer, according to a study
published on Wednesday suggesting another health benefit from the so-
    called sunshine vitamin.

  • Pine bark significantly reduces menstrual pain - A new study reveals
dysmenorrhea, a condition that causes extremely painful menstrual
periods affecting millions of women each year, can be reduced naturally
by taking Pycnogenol (pic-noj-en-all), pine bark extract from the French
maritime pine tree. [Pycnogenol is one of the ingredients in
    Hiscorbadyne.]

  • Antioxidant-rich fruit, veg linked to less gullet cancer - An increased
intake of antioxidant vitamins C and E, and beta-carotene may cut the
risk of Barrett's oesophagus, a precursor to oesophageal cancer,
suggests a new study from California.

  • Wonder medicine plant claims to cure cancer - Scientists have finally
identified and named a wonder plant that has been creating waves in
India some time now. The plant traditionally called Kam-sabut is
claimed to be able to cure cancer cases which doctors have given up on.
Researchers from Manipur University's life science department say the
plant belongs to the Euphorbia ceae family but was of a new species
and a new name Croton Caudatus Gieseler has been allotted by the
Botanical Survey of India, Shillong following a submission of a research
report submitted by a MU team. Extracts of Euphorbia ceae of at least
10 species are used by Columbian traditional healers to treat ulcers,
cancers, tumours, warts and other diseases.

  • Omega-3 linked to healthy eyes - A high intake of omega-3 fatty acids
and fish may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
by up to 38 per cent, suggests a new meta-analysis. Pooling the data
from nine studies, researchers from the University of Melbourne in
Australia report that the benefits were most pronounced against late
(more advanced) AMD, while eating fish twice a week was associated
with a reduced risk of both early and late AMD. The meta-analysis,
which included 88,974 participants and 3,203 people with AMD, is
published in the June issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.

  • Legal Drugs Kill Far More Than Illegal, Florida Says - MIAMI - From
"Scarface" to "Miami Vice," Florida's drug problem has been portrayed as
the story of a single narcotic: cocaine. But for Floridians, prescription
drugs are increasingly a far more lethal habit. An analysis of autopsies
in 2007 released this week by the Florida Medical Examiners
Commission found that the rate of deaths caused by prescription drugs
was three times the rate of deaths caused by all illicit drugs combined.

  • Fattening Water - If you drink flavored water as a substitute for plain
water, beware.Flavored water can increase the size of your waistline,
and threaten your health. The problem with drinking flavored water to
stay hydrated is that it contains about as much sugar as one can of
soda. Drinking just one bottle can significantly spike your insulin levels,
promoting insulin resistance and increased fat storage. Many
manufacturers flavor their water with fructose or (even worse) High
Fructose Corn Syrup - both culprits behind leptin and insulin resistance.
One study found that fructose affects the hormones involved in appetite
regulation. A drink high in fructose caused low levels of the hormone
leptin. Leptin lets you know that you have eaten enough. Low leptin
causes high levels of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates eating. The
end result is that your hormones tell you to keep eating. And if you go
with a no-calorie option, the threat to your health can be worse.

  • GM crops banned in Switzerland until 2012 - The Swiss Federal
Council (government) has voted to extend the country's moratorium on
genetically modified (GM) plants for a further three years beyond the
current expiry date of November 2010, Dow Jones reports. The extension
is to allow time for a national research programme into the benefits and
risks of GM crops to be completed and the results assessed. Questions
over the biological safety of GM plants and the coexistence of GM,
conventional and organic crops are being addressed.

  • Omega 3 & Satiety - Obese people receiving supplements of long-chain
(animal sourced) omega-3 fatty acids while following a weight loss
programme experienced a feeling of fullness for longer, says a new
study. "We show that the long chain omega-3 fatty acids can affect
postprandial appetite sensations in volunteers during a period of weight
loss induced by energy restriction," wrote lead author Dolores Parra in
the journal Appetite. "A diet rich in long chain omega 3 fatty acids
modulates satiety in overweight and obese volunteers during weight
loss" Consumption of the weight loss diet and the high-dose omega-3
led to fewer hunger sensations immediately after the test meals, as
well as two hours later. Blood sample analysis also showed that a
higher omega-3 concentration, and an improved omega-3 to omega-6
ratio were associated with higher satiety, reported the researchers. "The
most important finding of this study is that subjects who eat a dinner
rich in long chain omega-3 fatty acids feel less hunger and more full
directly after and 2 hours after then their counterparts fed with the low
long chain omega-3 fatty acids diet," wrote the authors. "This
observation indicates that long chain omega-3 fatty acids modulate
hunger signals." [all long-chain Omega 3 is animal-sourced; vegetable-
sourced (including chia seed) Omega 3's are short-chained and require
some long-chained to change into the Omega 3's our bodies can utilize
    effectively.]

  • Many Americans May Benefit From Eating A Higher-Protein Diet -
Current protein recommendations of between 10-35% of the diet, were
established with the goal of preventing deficiency, but newer research
indicates that many adults may benefit from eating more than the
minimum requirement. These findings are presented in a supplement in
the May issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition describing the
conclusions of a Protein Summit held last spring, which brought together
the world's leading scientists in protein research. The summit's
attendees report in the supplement that eating a higher protein diet -
still within the recommended range, but toward the top of it - may play
a role in optimal health, as higher protein diets are linked with a lower
risk for many health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic
syndrome, cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis as well as
sarcopenia, the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength.
The summit's conclusions complement examination of evidence by the
International Dietary Energy Consultancy Group (IDECG), World Health
Organization/Food and Agricultural Organization and Dietary Reference
Intakes (DRI) panel, which has determined that there is either a benefit
or no harm with protein intakes three to four times the minimum
requirement.  [While most health-care providers are still touting the
value of using meat as a condiment, those working with only grass-fed
& wild meats are finding great success with many people on an 85%
meat diet and state that is the true diet of our paleolithic ancestors.]

  • Fleas, Ticks, and Autism - A new study shows that pregnant women
who use flea and tick shampoos on pets may double the risk of autism
in their children. This finding comes from the Childhood Autism Risks
from Genetics and the Environment study (CHARGE) – a case-control
study from the University of California Davis. The ongoing research
follows 2,000 children – some with autism, some with developmental
delay, and some with typical development – and compares individual
genetic patterns with exposure to medications, chemicals, food
products, and other environmental factors. The authors (who stress the
findings are preliminary) believe that insecticide chemicals called
pyrethrins may play a role in triggering autism in certain kids. Pyrethrins
are extracted from Chrysanthemum flowers and are regarded as low in
toxicity. In fact, the USDA considers pyrethrum formulas to be safe to
use in food preparation areas. Pyrethrins are widely used in insect
foggers (to kill flies, mosquitoes, and cockroaches) and are also found
in some lice-control shampoos for humans.

  • Vitamin C lowering LDL cholesterol AND triglycerides - That's the
conclusion of a recent meta-analysis that examined 13 clinical trials.
Subjects in the trials included more than 400 people with high
cholesterol levels. The investigation indicated that a minimum daily
supplement of 500 mg was required in order to reap the cholesterol and
triglycerides benefits. [... so eat plenty of fresh, organic fruits and
veggies and take your Hiscorbadyne daily!]

  • 40% Less Bladder Cancer - Eating as little as three small servings of
raw cruciferous vegetables per month, such as broccoli and cabbage, has
been found to decrease the risk of developing bladder cancer by an
astonishing 40 percent. This was discovered by researchers from the
Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo. The study is only one of
several that have recently added to the evidence that raw fruits and
vegetables dramatically lower cancer risk. Given that these cruciferous
anti-cancer nutrients only stay in the body for about twelve hours, these
study subjects only experienced a total of about 36 hours with these
nutrients (out of a total of 720 hours in a typical month). In other
words, they only had these anti-cancer nutrients in their bodies five
percent of the time and yet, astonishingly, their bladder cancer rates
plummeted by 40 percent! Also remarkably, the researchers did not find
a protective benefit from eating the same quantity of cooked cruciferous
vegetables. This indicates that the anti-cancer properties of cruciferous
    vegetables are destroyed by cooking.

Point to Ponder #1 - Simple Test Detects Cancer
YEARS BEFORE  Mainstream Medicine by Nurse Olivia
at Red Pill Reich
We've all heard that early cancer detection is important, right?

There is a urine test you can mail from home that can detect cancer over
2 years before symptoms appear, even skin cancer! It's definitely
preferable to mammograms, which actually cause cancer, but you won't
hear about it from your doctor.

The Navarro Urine Test is useful to everyone, especially those who want
to monitor their progress while using natural cancer treatments, or those
in "remission."

There are also people who go to the doctor, 100% sure intuitively that
they have cancer, but because it takes billions of cells before a tumor can
be detected using mainstream methods, these people are told by their
doctors that it's "all in their head." Sometimes it isn't.

No prescription or doctor's order is necessary to have this test. There is a
lab in Ohio that performs it, but their method is not accurate, so it's
worth the extra effort and expense to ship your urine sample to the
Philippines. This is where the test was originally developed, and the MD
who performs it today is actually the son of the cancer specialist who first
discovered it.

A number of credible cancer researchers recommend the Navarro Urine
Test and claim it is very accurate. There are people who have been using
it for over 30 years.

It may help someone you love with early detection. It may also help them
avoid the panic that most people go through when diagnosed by a doctor.

Most doctors tell patients they will die if they don't get chemo, radiation
or surgery, the only legal ways (and most unsuccessful ways) to treat
cancer in the US, and most patients, not knowing a thing about natural
cancer cures, think cancer is an automatic death sentence if they don't
submit.

If they only knew that doctors learn nothing about curing cancer in
medical school...

Point to Ponder #2 - The Main Causes of Disease &
Dysfunction by Dr. Ben Kim

With few exceptions, disease and dysfunction do not develop quickly.
Disease and dysfunction tend to develop slowly, usually over many years
as subtle and overt signs that mark loss of health are ignored.

I have found that many people feel that they are fine until they get
diagnosed with a named condition like diabetes or hypertension. The
reality is that degeneration is a fact of life - with each passing day, we
lose some of our health potential. It's the pace at which our bodies
degenerate that we influence through our daily choices. By understanding
the main causes of disease and dysfunction, we can make dietary and
lifestyle choices that promote longevity.

The main causes of acceleration of disease and dysfunction can be
categorized into three groups:
  • Injury
  • Toxicity
  • Deficiency

Let's take a close look at each of these categories of causes of disease
and dysfunction:

Point to Ponder #3 -The Worm Turns by Moises
Velasquez-Manoff, New York Times Magazine
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/29/magazine/29wwln-essay-t.html?
_r=1&scp=1&sq=MOISES+VELASQUEZ-MANOFF&st=nyt&oref=slogin

In the early 1990s, Joel Weinstock, a gastroenterologist, encountered a
puzzle. The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (I.B.D.) across
North America increased markedly during the 20th century. Many thought
that “bad” genes would eventually explain the spike, but Weinstock didn’t
buy it. In areas where fewer than two generations ago the I.B.D.
incidence might have been as low as 1 in 10,000, it was now 1 in 250. A
defective gene couldn’t spread that quickly, he reasoned. It had to be
something in the environment. But what? Stumped, Weinstock tried
turning the question around. Instead of asking what triggered I.B.D., he
asked what, before the 20th century, protected against it?

Clockwise From Top Left: Steve Gschmeissner, Science Pictures Ltd. ,
CNRI (2), LSHTM, Pr Bouree. All From Photo Researchers
At the time, Weinstock, then at the University of Iowa, was editing a
book on parasitic worms. These worms, or helminths, have a paradoxical
effect on the host. Rather than induce inflammation, which is the body’s
typical response to invasion, the intruders calm the host immune system.
They force a peace, scientists think, to avoid eviction and keep the host
— their home and food source — as healthy as possible. As Weinstock
considered the I.B.D. puzzle, he wondered if immune manipulation by
worms could incidentally protect against other diseases.

Comparison of the prevalence of I.B.D. and surveys of worm-infestation
rates revealed a telling pattern. About 10 years after improved hygiene
and deworming efforts reduced worms in a given population, I.B.D. rates
jumped. Weinstock had his hypothesis: after a long coevolution, the
human immune system came to depend on the worms for proper
functioning. When cleaner conditions and new medicines evicted the
worms from our bodies, the immune system went out of kilter. “Hygiene
has made our lives better,” says Weinstock, now at Tufts University. “But
in the process of eliminating exposure to the 10 or 20 things that can
make us sick, we’re also eliminating exposure to things that make us
well.”

At the time of Weinstock’s initial musings, epidemiologists had already
dubbed this notion “the hygiene hypothesis”: as improved hygiene
reduced exposure to certain infectious agents, the immune system began
malfunctioning. By the late 20th century, autoimmune disorders,
characterized by the body’s defenses attacking some aspect of the self,
had increased markedly, and allergic diseases, defined by an overblown
immune response to nonthreatening substances, afflicted almost half the
people in the developed world.

If eliminating worms led to an increase in disease, could re-introducing
worms actually treat these diseases? In mice, the answer was yes.
Worms were used to “inoculate” against mouse asthma, Type 1 diabetes,
multiple sclerosis and I.B.D. But how to re-worm humans? We got rid of
them for a reason. Too many worms can lead to anemia or obstructed
bowels. The wrong kind can cause considerable suffering, even death.

Weinstock spotted a prime candidate on pig farms. Pig farmers are
chronically exposed to Trichuris suis, the pig whipworm, and tolerate it
with no apparent side effects. (This is not the potentially dangerous worm
found in undercooked pork.)

In 2005, he published results from two human studies. After ingesting
2,500 microscopic T. suis eggs at 3-week intervals for 24 weeks, 23 of 29
Crohn’s patients responded positively. (Crohn’s disease belongs to the I.B.
D. family, which also includes ulcerative colitis.) Twenty-one went into
complete remission. In the second study, 13 of 30 ulcerative colitis
patients improved compared with 4 in the 24-person placebo group.

Scientists around the world are intrigued. Several large studies are under
way. Trials using T. suis eggs on patients with multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s
and hay fever are beginning in the United States, Australia and Denmark,
respectively. In Germany, scientists are planning studies on asthma and
food allergies. Other European scientists, meanwhile, plan to replicate
many of these experiments with Necator americanus, a human hookworm.

When scientists unravel how helminths manipulate the immune system —
work is already under way — Weinstock foresees new worm-based drugs.
But that may be a long way off, he says. Anyway, the pill approach risks
missing the greater lesson. As he says, “We’re part of our environment;
we’re not separate from it.” It’s a simple observation with profound
implications that are changing how scientists view the human organism.
The dawning realization is this: You are not just your genetic self. You
are a community of interacting organisms. This You ecosystem includes
the bacteria that outnumber your genetic cells by 10 to 1, various fungi,
viruses and just maybe a few parasites as well. Disturb or remove any key
player, and the whole system can come unbalanced.

... This article highlights the importance of letting you and your kids "play
in the dirt." The over-sterilization (not just plain handwashing) of our
bodies actually bodes ill for us from the standpoint of allowing our bodies
to actually build their immune systems to frequently encountered "bugs."
Far better to build immunity gradually and naturally (the best
"vaccination" ever!), and support our immune system by eating plenty of
fermented products as all societies have for centuries.

Point to Ponder #4 - The Gremlin Inside by Jenny
Thompson, HSI Alert
www.hsibaltimore.com
Dear Reader,

You might think you're hungry, but that's just the hormones talking.

When it comes to your desire for food, you're largely at the mercy of the
hormones
leptin and ghrelin. A rising ghrelin level prompts your brain to
register the sensation of hunger. As you eat and fulfill your body's need
for nourishment, leptin rises, ghrelin drops, and hunger fades. Anyone
who sets out to lose weight with a program of exercise and restricted
calorie intake will have to face down ghrelin - a formidable adversary.

A 2002 New England Journal of Medicine study followed subjects' ghrelin
levels over the course of a six-month weight reduction effort. After the
first three months, each of the overweight subjects had lost an average of
nearly 40 pounds. By the end of the study they had managed to maintain
that level of weight loss.

But here's the bad news (and possibly the key reason dieters typically
regain lost weight): As body weight dropped, ghrelin output increased. At
the end of the study, the subjects' LOWEST ghrelin levels were almost as
high as their pre-meal ghrelin peaks before their weight-loss program
began.

That's daunting. Here you are, working hard, week after week, exercising
and depriving yourself of calories, while ghrelin lays the groundwork for
backsliding the moment you let your guard down.

Now for the good news: There are three steps you can take to tame the
ghrelin gremlin.

1) Get enough sleep
Research shows that ghrelin levels are generally higher and leptin levels
are lower in people who regularly get inadequate sleep. As a result,
hunger is more pronounced during the day. And worse: Sleep deprived
people tend to desire calorie-dense, high-carbohydrate foods. But for
most people, a full eight hours of sleep each night may not be necessary
to moderate ghrelin/leptin levels. A 2006 sleep study shows that many
overweight people may experience benefits by adding just 20 minutes of
additional sleep each night.

2) Avoid fructose
Fructose makes ghrelin rise. And fructose is in a wide range of processed
foods. A study in which subjects of normal weight drank a fructose drink
or a glucose drink after each meal for 24 hours showed that high fructose
intake was linked to higher ghrelin levels, and lower leptin and insulin
levels.

3) Don't attempt a crash diet
A weight-loss diet that starts right in with a steep drop in calories is a
shock to the system - a shock that's more likely to prompt ghrelin
increase. Your body gets a chance to adjust incrementally if you ease into
a new regimen of less caloric intake. And of course, avoiding simple,
refined carbs is a must. Consumption of inferior carbs just makes you
hungry for more carbs.

Point to Ponder #5 - Should I Vaccinate My Child? by
Shane Ellison, M.Sc., The People's Chemist

Vaccine talk is riddled with shoddy science, emotional arguments,
convoluted explanations and all out quackery. Very little common sense
shines its way through the murky vaccine debate.

Rather than question the safety and efficacy of vaccines, most physicians
and parents blindly “immunize” children.  Rarely do they ask the lifesaving
question of, “Will a vaccine protect my child?” As a pharmaceutical
chemist and parent, I researched that question six years ago. The answer
was an astounding no.

Vaccines are purported to work by triggering immunity. It is “thunk” by the
experts that by exposing our immune system to weak or dead infectious
agents, such as measles or a flu virus, that it creates the appropriate
immune defense. This logic has been used to defend the use of every
vaccine to date. Yet, each vaccine has proven that the theory is nothing
more than mental masturbation for nerdy scientists; it sounds good and
feels better, but it’s not the real thing. At best, vaccines only temporarily
boost our defenses, which hardly compensates for the myriad of potential
side effects. Few people are aware of – or willing to accept - these cold,
hard facts.

Point to Ponder #6 - Hang Up and Live by W. C.
Douglass, MD
www.douglassreport.com/dailydose

Dear Friend,

Not to brag or anything, but I tend to be a step or two (or three) ahead of
the rest of my colleagues in this doctoring business. It often happens
that what people are calling me "crazy" for saying one year, turns out to
be "sage" and "learned" the following year. This time the case in point is
the potential health danger of cell phones.

On a recent episode of CNN"s Larry King Live, three neurosurgeons
publicly stated that they never hold their cell phones to their ears. One of
these surgeons, Dr. Keith Black of Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los
Angeles, explained, "I think the safe practice is to use an earpiece to
keep the microwave antenna away from your brain."

This is just one of the recent events that's prompted a reexamination of
the now largely dismissed link between cell phone use and tumors. The
other is Senator Edward Kennedy's recent diagnosis with the type of
glioma tumor that's been suspected to be caused by cell phone use. Still,
most have long ago dismissed the cell phone/cancer link – even the
American Cancer Society.

But keep in mind that the studies that influenced the medical thinking are
somewhat old by medical standards. Even the FDA recognizes that those
studies only focused on a period of use of three years. At the time, cell
phone use was still just on the increase, and the technology used was
different.

Since then, cell phones have (to the chagrin of those like myself who
value polite society) infiltrated nearly every facet of American life. With
more than 3 billion people now using cell phones, it's about time people
are looking into their safety.

At one time, I bought into the idea that the cell phone/cancer link was
little more that urban legend. But then in 2005 I came across some
European research linking a decade or more of cell phone use to as much
as a 4 percent increase in the likelihood of developing permanent, brain-
damaging tumors of the auditory nerve. This report confirmed the findings
of a 2002 Finnish study that linked the type of radiation emitted by cell
phones to adverse effects on brain tissue.

I'm especially concerned about the endless hours that kids in the early
(and pre-teen!) years spend using the phones, because their brains and
bodies are still in the developmental stages.

"More and more kids are using cell phones," said Dr. Paul J. Rosch, a
professor of medicine at New York Medical College. "They may be much
more affected. Their brains are growing rapidly, and their skulls are
thinner."

The obvious safe bet would be to use one of the wireless Bluetooth
headsets and to keep the radiation-emitting cell phone somewhere else,
preferably away from your body. Of course, at this point no one knows
what side effects there could be to having a Bluetooth transmitter stuck
in your ear all day, either.

If we find out a decade or so down the road that prolonged cell phone use
IS major health issue, literally half of the world's population will be
affected – and that could be a devastating public health crisis.

If you ask me, it's more prudent to take precautions than to adopt a "wait-
and-see" attitude. And the best way to do that is to simply cut down on
your cell phone use. No prescription necessary.

Calling out the risks of too many cell calls,

Point to Ponder #7 - The Healing Power of Honey by
Kelly Joyce Neff, Natural News

Raw honey – which has not been pasteurized or filtered, and ideally taken
directly from the hive – is a treasure chest of nutritional value and
medicinal remedies. It contains an abundance of vitamins and minerals
and is a natural and powerful medicine, both internally and externally.

The list of honey's beneficial functions is a long one.
  • Honey increases calcium absorption;
  • can increase hemoglobin count and treat or prevent anemia caused
    by nutritional factors;
  • can help arthritic joints, when combined with apple cider vinegar;
  • fights colds and respiratory infections of all kinds;
  • can help to boost gastrointestinal ulcer healing;
  • works as a natural and gentle laxative;
  • aids constipation, allergies and obesity;
  • provides an array of vitamins and minerals;
  • and supplies instant energy without the insulin surge caused by
    white sugar.

Many have found raw honey helpful for its positive effects against
allergies and hay fever, and one or two teaspoons last thing at night can
help with insomnia. As an antiseptic, honey is also a drawing agent for
poisons from bites or stings or infected wounds, and has outperformed
antibiotics in treatments for stomach ulcerations, gangrene, surgical
wound infections, surgical incisions and the protection of skin grafts,
corneas, blood vessels and bones during storage and shipment.

"Raw honey is exceptionally effective internally against bacteria and
parasites. Plus, raw honey contains natural antibiotics, which help kill
microbes directly. Raw honey, when applied topically, speeds the healing
of tissues damaged by infection and/or trauma. It contains vitamins,
minerals and enzymes, as well as sugars, all of which aid in the healing
of wounds."

So writes Dr. Cass Igram, D.O. in The Survivor's Nutritional Pharmacy. In a
fascinating modern development, scientists and doctors are beginning to
rediscover the effectiveness of honey as a wound treatment. In recent
years, honey has been used effectively in clinical settings for the
treatment of fist-sized ulcers extending to the bone, as well as for first,
second and third degree burns. Complete healing has been reported
without the need for skin grafts and with no infection or muscle loss. It
can be applied full strength to such conditions, covered with a sterile
bandage, and changed daily. When the wounds are clean, honey acts as a
healer. This also is the same procedure for infected wounds, ulcerations
and impetigo. Garlic honey can also be applied directly to infected
wounds, which will help clean up the area of infection.

Dr. Peter Molan, professor of biochemistry at Waikato University, New
Zealand, has been at the forefront of honey research for 20 years. He
heads the university's Honey Research Unit, which is internationally
recognized for its expertise in the antimicrobial properties of honey.
Clinical observations and experimental studies have established that
honey has effective antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Astonishingly, it painlessly removes pus, scabs and dead tissue from
wounds and stimulates new tissue growth. "Randomized trials have
shown that honey is more effective in controlling infection in burn wounds
than silver sulfadiazine, the antibacterial ointment most widely used on
burns in hospitals," explains Dr. Molan.

Dr. Molan believes that if honey were used from the start in cases of
septicemia, there would be far less tissue damage resulting. "The
remarkable ability of honey to reduce inflammation and mop up free
radicals should halt the progress of the skin damage like it does in burns,
as well as protecting from infection setting in", says Dr. Molan. "At
present, people are turning to honey when nothing else works. But there
are very good grounds for using honey as a therapeutic agent of first
choice."

Researchers believe that the therapeutic potential of honey is grossly
underutilized. With increasing interest in the use of alternative therapies
and as the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria spreads, honey
may finally receive its due recognition as a wound healer.

Indeed, it works: Raw honey makes a sterile, painless and effective
wound dressing. Apply it directly to open cuts, abrasions and burns, and
cover it with a piece of gauze. The results will occur quicker than with
conventional alternatives, such as salves and creams.

Honey is also exceptionally effective for respiratory ailments. One
Bulgarian study of almost 18,000 patients found that it improved chronic
bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis, chronic and allergic rhinitis and sinusitis.
It's an effective treatment for colds, flu, respiratory infections and a
generally depressed immune system. Whereas sugar shuts down the
immune system, a good quality honey will stimulate it into action.
